WELCOME TO THE ROUNDTABLE FOR SEPTEMBER 2018
Greetings from Venice, California

Sorry for the missed deadline folks, too much real life swirling around the homestead so this will be very brief and yet functional.

I can't begin to say how much I appreciate this place, and the people, and I hope that there is a way to bring back a lot of our old friends and bring in new ones.

I'm going to leave it to you wonderful people to just start the thread or carry over what's already being discussed in the August RT.
I'll leave August open for a few days before locking it.

Time to feed the puppies again. I can see why breeders like to sell them at 8 weeks: They eat a LOT of food and they need it in 3 or 4 meals around the clock. Fortunately, they have learned not to bite and scratch your legs so much. I've got some impressive scars.

Puppies... yeah... hits a nerve 'cuz grandson, who is getting married next week has invested in a Newfoundland "puppy". His dad, who is a dog person, called me to let me know that Adam had lost his mind.

Unfamiliar as I am with dog breeds, I googled, to find out. So,here's a suggestion for a few minutes of entertainment. Google:

why not to buy a newfoundland dog
Not sure Adam's wife-to-be knows what she's getting in to. smile

I've got a 160 pound Shepard-Ridgeback cross male. Fortunately very short-haired and not a big drooler. So I know all about BIG dogs. You could throw a saddle on him and give pony rides.

These pups are from my 70 pound American Yellow Lab, the Newfie's neighbor. But this is not the big, slow, friendly English Lab. She's more high strung and as fast as the wind. She plays with the neighbor's Saluki and keeps up. Definitely a duck dog. At 6 weeks her pups jumped right in a little pool we made for them. They actually laid down in the water! I would post pictures but they look just like any other 8 week old Yellow Labs.

I hope that nephew does not live in Florida: Newfies tend to overheat easily.

My sister has a Newfie (her name is "Pinkie" LOL). They are WONDERFUL dogs, but LORD are they big. I've had 2 labs that, as you described, were more high-strung and smaller than other labs. They call them "trial" dogs, or "field" dogs, and they tend to be more energetic and smaller in stature - almost mid-size rather than large.

The American sporting version is practically a different breed from the English house pet version. I've had English labs before, but this is my first American. I looked for one purposefully when I bought her. In her litter I think we have one English throwback. He's 17 pounds when the other pups are 12, and just generally not as high strung. He lays down a lot! A good companion dog for an elderly person.

We have three females and they are all very social. When we sit in their area, they all come to sit with us and they like to be picked up. The males are all running around playing bitey games and tug-o-war. The personality difference between the sexes is amazing at only two months old.

I am SO SORRY Rick, yes it is true I dropped the ball but I got hit over the head with a lot of "stuff" and I flaked. Apologies to all.

What did everyone think of Maher's appeal to bring Al Franken back out of hiding? Isn't it time to give Al a makeover and a rehab, for ... ??
For what, exactly? For posing for a humorous photo shoot?

New Rule: Bring Back Al Franken
