But maybe Americans are too stupid now to elect qualified leaders?

Republicans certainly are. Really. Take a look at the goobers they've elected recently.

Everything that Democrats have done since FDR has been socially motivated. To use Bernie's words: To make government work for everyone, not just a few.
But don't get me wrong here, I'm still not a terrific fan of Bernie Sanders. In fact, I think Hillary Clinton was, arguably, the best candidate to ever run for the office.

I think this needs to be broadcast far and wide: Republicans know they can't win a fair fight, so.... They cheat: McConnell screws Dems ahead of election with October session. The Republican party really is just well-dressed Nazis.

That link seems to be broken. Try this one:

Best in terms of qualifications and experience, yes.
But in terms of her qualities in terms of campaigning, sorry..she was a miserable candidate and an even more miserable campaigner.

I had no problem forgiving her because I knew she could do a competent job, or at the very least, satisfactory. But I know a lot of people who were turned off by her even in 2008.

But I do agree that socialism has indeed done a lot for us in the last sixty years. It's just that our hard-baked stupidity on the term is derived from decades of red scaremongering and Bircherism.
Americans know what socialism is but they don't realize that it's socialism. They know what it is because it's part of their everyday lives but when you tell them that it's socialism, they deny it...they even double down on denial.

And it is IMPOSSIBLE to CURE this generation of that disease.
Our kids couldn't give a damn if it's called socialism but our generation can't get over all the postwar fears from the 1950's.
Most people my age or older seem to have a built in McCarthyist knee jerk response to the utterance of the word.

When I hire someone it's based on qualifications and experience, not whether they're the life of the party. But these days it's all about charisma. I didn't vote for or support her in 2008. Not because Obama was the more charismatic candidate(he was) but because Republicans had her number and would have defeated her anyway. I thought maybe she had got past that in 2016. Especially considering the horrible candidates fielded by Republicans. But Americans proved once again just how shallow and ignorant they are.

Chunk
, the last two posts should be their own thread. Indeed, many of your posts are quite offtopic Feel free to start a thread on your own topic, but you're drifting too far from the subject of this one.

My apologies to the forum NWP. I've deleted, what I hope, are the straying posts of the subject: 'Returning rationality to public policy'.
I regret having transgressed the norms and traditions of the group.

Please continue to post here, though. I understand the perspective and agree that both parties share the blame for bad public policy. One does it as an adjunct to power, the other with intent. What I want to focus on, though, is how we return rationality to the process.

We elect Democrats. From those teetering on the center line to those leaning to the far left. We put on our marching boots and vote blue.
We overwhelm them at the polls.
There can be no rationality as long as Republicans retain control.
