Well, the right-wing solution is actually "I'll be dead before then, so screw you." when you peel the onion of made up excuses and BS. Which is very strange because they seem most concerned about descendants and legacies. Just look at the whole estate tax issue: The most conservative people are the most concerned about leaving their kids the maximum amount.

I guess the future of the planet would be something that would help a lot of people of other races and ethnicities, so they are against it. But it's definitely a case of throwing their babies out with the bath water. Literally.

They coddle their own babies but don't have any problem throwing everyone else's babies into a vat of toxic industrial waste.

Money has always solved their problems. As the seas rise and the coastal regions are flooding, they simply buy land on higher ground. Problem solved.
As crops fail and billions die they will become the feudal lords with private armies and villages of peasants to grow their food and take care of their eery need. Bezos and Musk are looking to colonize Mars, and will spend enough to save this planet so that our overlords will be able to fly away someday to a safe, but very expensive, extraterrestrial resort where every luxury is manufactured on site.

I think Mars is a really crappy place to build a space colony. The gravity and atmosphere are pretty useless. You need to make gravity and air, so you might as well just do that in space. Earth orbit seems like a comfortable distance from Sol, in terms of energy you can collect with existing technology. Capture a few comets for gases and asteroids for metals, and you are set.

Build a spinning ring to live in and you have 1 G. Build bigger rings as you get more people. Photovoltaic arrays don't spin so they can point at the sun 24/7.

You're not one o' them Ringworld Engineers are you?

Bezos and Musk have their eyes on Mars. So Mars it is.

The 38% gravity may be an unsurmountable problem: The only way we know how to make artificial gravity is to spin a wheel and live on the inside rim. But how do you combine full "gravity" from a wheel with 38% real gravity from Mars? In space, you just have to spin your wheel and everything is fine. We need some data with a 0.38 G wheel in orbit to see if 38% gravity is enough to avoid the brain damage and other bad effects of weightlessness.

If it is, then Mars could be a good one-way destination for the retired.

They'll just wear weights to make their weight equal to earth...
grin

There is NO planet B. We all work to keep this one habitable or we die.

Does nothing for your fluid balance, lymphatic circulation, brain weight, etc.
