Here is a wishful thought. We could have a national petition and, if the petition gets x number of signins, the subject will be on the next national presidential election ballot.

The devil, of course, is in the details. I suspect this would have to be run through the internet and that there would also have to be some kind of method for making sure that everybody had only one vote. I suspect might even work. I also have no idea how many signins would be needed to validate the petition. I also think that the number of these would also have to be controlled, how about 5 allowed per election cycle? OR don't control the number of petitions but only allow the top 5, or 10, to pass through to the election ballot.

The system is designed on purpose to work more gradually than that. Most states have petition initiatives for their voting. When enough states have adopted something, then it can be passed as law by Congress or made an amendment to the US Constitution. But that is very slow and difficult, by design, so every fad that comes along isn't added. Just look at prohibition, slavery, civil rights, women's suffrage.

What you are saying is absolutely right. My thought would accomplish several things. The first is that people would think they had a say in fed gov. The trick would be to make the number of signers HUGE whilst, at the same time, allowing folks to "have a say".

Think on it. To have a say you can always talk to your elected and your elected will agree with everything and do absolutely nothing. This way, especially if a petition got HUGE numbers of signers attached, would at the very least, put the elected on notice.

I just don't know how one could be started and recognized for what it is. For instance, anybody can, right now, put a petition up and ask people to sign it. There are a LOT of these on the net right now on just about anything one can think of. The trick is to somehow get these into the hands of EVERYBODY.

Anyway, it was a thought.............
