Gov. Gavin Newsom to stop death penalty in California, giving reprieves to 737 death row inmates

Sophia Bollag
The Sacramento Bee
March 12, 2019

Quote:
Gov. Gavin Newsom is putting a moratorium on the death penalty in California, sparing the lives of more than 700 death-row inmates.

Newsom plans to sign an executive order Wednesday morning granting reprieves to all 737 Californians awaiting executions – a quarter of the country’s death row inmates.

His action comes three years after California voters rejected an initiative to end the death penalty, instead passing a measure to speed up executions.

That was mighty nice of him. Seems like the voters disagree though. Perhaps they, like me, believe that sometimes the best policy is to string them up before the sun sets.

That little freak with the bowl haircut who gunned down a bunch of black folks in church for instance...

He mentioned that there were 737 inmates on Death Row, and given the ratio of innocent people wrongfully convicted, that worked out to about 30 or more, and he said that kept him up at night.

I AM, for the record, TECHNICALLY in favor of the death penalty, however given the fact that thirty or more innocent people will die, I cannot be in favor of it in any practical sense.

It's pretty cut and dried. I can't justify killing thirty innocent people, who by all rights shouldn't even be in there to begin with, just because of some bloodlust.

'cept that didn't happen in Cali. I'm sure Scott Peterson is happy though. Hmm

Problem is that death penalties are a lot more expensive than life without parole, for various reasons. You can get rid of the reasons, but that just makes it more likely you kill innocent people. I sometimes think we need two new sentences that juries can find: Probably Guilty, meaning better lock him up until more evidence shows up. And Guilty As Hell, for example when the police arrest a murderer at the scene with a continuous chain of witnesses and evidence, so there's no possibility of innocence.

Most death penalty scandals are from Probably Guilty cases, where some witness says "He looks like the guy" and they railroad some poor sucker into the gas chamber. Usually because he's poor and non-White with a lousy lawyer.
