I'm in shock. I'm watching live as the cathedral is consumed by fire. It looks like a complete loss. 950 years of history.

Fantastic architecture and workmanship.

Sickening. I'm not even a Christian, much less Catholic, but so much history lost. At least I read they had all the apostle statues down from the spire for restoration. So they still have those.

I have never been religious, so to me religious things in general are only curiosities. But some products of religion (and other sources), such as this magnificent cathedral, I find immensely inspiring in a nameless way (preferring to let it remain nameless and unsullied by intellectual grafitti).

One consolation is in that there is a resolve to rebuild, which will give a large number of contemporary people the opportunity to re-experience the creation of an awe inspiring work.

Assassin's Creed Unity created an accurate 3D model of the structure.

Here's a nice walkthrough of Notre Dame as it might have appeared during the French Revolution. At around 17:30 he climbs the steeple.

It took people hundreds of years to build these cathedrals and they pretty much created many of our modern financial institutions. The stories about people spending their entire lives working on them is awe-inspiring.

I have been particularly buoyed today with headlines about how much of Notre Dame Cathedral survived. The three rose windows apparently all survived. The organ and pulpit were essentially untouched. Many of the most precious artifacts were saved. There is a considerable effort currently underway to protect many of the artworks that cannot be moved, but could be damaged by exposure to the elements and detritus of the fire. Unfortunately, because of instability of the structure, there is concern that they might not be gotten to before they are damaged (if water damage hasn't already occurred). Nonetheless, the estimate is that 60% of the cathedral was not seriously damaged. Saved from the flames: The treasures that survived the Notre Dame fire

Just to throw a bomb in there: Notre Dame was having a very hard time raising donations to restore the cathedral before the fire. Then they removed the apostle statues for renovation, and suddenly a fire breaks out. Now they are deluged by donations, corporate pledges, etc. Sound familiar? Jesus works in mysterious ways...
