My baby dog passed-away today.

The Vet made a nice bed for Sam and I lied on the floor next to the bed.

Sam passed-away at 4:07 pm this afternoon. I was with him. We were nose-to-nose looking into each others eyes the entire time. He did not suffer. He simply went to sleep.

You have my deepest sympathy, Rick. There is nothing sadder than losing your best friend.

I am so terribly sorry to hear that Rick. Dogs are almost always so much better than humans in so many ways. My rescue dog (from five years old) Aggie is nearing her end as now her back legs barely work but she still loves “daddy”. And struggles so very much to keep up when we go for walks..

She is 13 now. I’ll post a pic if I can remember how go do such.

Thank you Greger and Ken for your kind sentiments.

Sammy could barely walk any longer, let alone hold himself up to go poop. The vet wanted to put Sam to sleep yesterday and I said, 'No, let's do it tomorrow, I want just one more night with him."

I took him home from the vet, he went pee and poop, and I gave him his favorite dinner: rotisserie chicken. I put him on my bed and we slept all night together on my bed.

He slept all day today. I had to wake him to take him to the Vet and I carried him to the SUV. He couldn't stand or walk.

I feel like a piece of me has died today. Sam was a HUGE part of my life. I bought a SUV 10 years ago so that we could run errands together. It was always nice knowing he was in the back part of the car with me.

I miss him already.

My wife's a vet (now retired) and we've had LOTS of dogs over the years. They bring so much joy, but they live such a short time. It seems unfair that your best friends only live 20 years at most, and we love big dogs so it's more like 10 or 12. That's how all of our past dogs have ended up. Since we both have a medical background, we can take care of them longer than most owners would. We even adopted an elderly shelter dog with a tumor: The shelter folks thought we were saints for providing hospice care they couldn't. She lasted almost two years though, and it was a very good two years.

It's a shame we can't offer the same painless passing to humans. My mom is 92, non-ambulatory, and now her kidneys are failing. The assisted living place had Medicare buy her a crane so they can get her to the bathroom and in her motorized chair for the dining room. I hope by the time I get there, we have sensible end of life assistance.

It makes me sad, Rick, because I remember Sam and how you got along. You have my deepest sympathy. I want to say, though, how happy I am that Sam got to have you in his life. It's a very special thing.

Roscoe is an old white faced gentleman now so I'll soon be treading the same path as you, Rick. It terrifies me.

Because my life revolves around my dog I'll be getting another one as soon as Roscoe passes. It'll have to be an old, used dog because I'm not sure I'll be around for 10-12 more years. If there is anything worse than losing your dog it would be going off and leaving him behind.

My step mother left three dogs behind when she passed. She thought she had made provisions for them with some neighbors, but they reneged immediately. They were actually grifters who repeatedly befriended the elderly so they could inherit stuff. Boy, were they pissed when they didn't get her house!

So my wife and I took them in. Found a loving home for one of them and all three have now passed their natural life times. So even though her provisions fell through, as executor I honored her wishes the best I could. That experience was illuminating: As an executor all I can say is that a death brings out the worst in some people.

Thank you for the nice sentiments, NW_P. Sam was a companion. We ate breakfast and dinner together nearly every day for 10 years. He ran errands with me every day when I got home from work. Whenever I was not working, we were always together. The whole reason I got the Escape was so that Sam could ride-around with me. We were like P'nutbutter & Jelly - we were ALWAYS together. He would even go downstairs and do laundry with me. He walked around the laundry room while I put clothes into the washer or dryer or folded clothes. Taking out the trash - yup, Sam was in tow. Grocery store? Sam was in the back of the Escape.

It was that way for 10 years after I inherited when my mom and dad died. My brother didn't want Sam because of Sam's severe epilepsy and the cost of his $200/mo medications and expensive neurology appointments.

Now my life feels so very empty.
