Edward Lewis, a producer who helped break the Hollywood blacklist with "Spartacus" by hiring "subversive" screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, and who later shared an Oscar nomination with his wife for producing "Missing," about the death of an American writer in Chile, died July 27, 2019.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Author Toni Morrison, the first black woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature, died on Aug. 6, 2019. Morrison, seen on Oct. 7, 1993, at her office in Princeton University in New Jersey, died following a short illness, her family said in a statement. She was 88.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Chris Kraft, the creator and longtime leader of NASA's Mission Control, died July 22, 2019, just two days after the 50th anniversary of what was his and NASA's crowning achievement: Apollo 11's moon landing. Kraft, right, shown in a 1981 photo with President Ronald Reagan, was 95.

I’m not really familiar with Chris Kraft, although he sounds like someone to be grateful to and for.

Anyone who gave Dalton Trumbo a job is a hero in my book, and Toni Morrison was damn near magical. I hope to take Obama’s advice and read/reread all her novels in the coming year.

If you read about David Koch, he was a curious mix of Libertarian and Republican politics and enormous philanthropy. From Wikipedia:

Quote:
]He was the 1980 Libertarian candidate for vice president of the United States and helped finance the campaign. He founded Citizens for a Sound Economy. He donated to political advocacy groups and to political campaigns, almost entirely Republican. He moved to the Republican Party in 1984; in 2012 he spent over $100 million to oppose the re-election of President Barack Obama. Through Americans for Prosperity and other dark money vehicles, he was a leading source of funding for climate change denial and attacks on environmental regulation, unions, and workers' rights. Greenpeace estimates that the Koch brothers put $127 million into 92 groups involved in preventing action on climate change. His companies are among the biggest polluters in the United States.

Beginning in 2006, the Chronicle of Philanthropy listed Koch as one of the world's top 50 philanthropists.

From 1982 to 2013, Koch contributed $18.6 million to WGBH Educational Foundation, including $10 million to the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) show Nova. Koch contributed to several charities including Lincoln Center, Sloan Kettering, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and the Dinosaur Wing at the American Museum of Natural History. The New York State Theater at Lincoln Center, home of the New York City Ballet, was renamed the David H. Koch Theater in 2008 following a gift of $100 million for the renovation of the theater.

In July 2015 David Koch and his brother were commended by both President Obama and activist Anthony Van Jones for their bipartisan efforts to reform the prison system in the United States.[83][84] For nearly ten years the Kochs together advocated for several reforms within the criminal justice system which include reducing recidivism rates, simplifying the employment process for the rehabilitated, and defending private property from government seizures through asset forfeiture.[84][85] Allying with groups such as the ACLU, the Center for American Progress, Families Against Mandatory Minimums, the Coalition for Public Safety, and the MacArthur Foundation, the Kochs maintained the current prison system unfairly targets low-income and minority communities at the expense of the public budget.

Koch endowed NOVA - one of my favorite PBS shows - but there was a catch, he had to approve any show content that dealt with anything science - especially climate change.

A lot of his philanthropy was self-serving: For example all four Koch boys have or had prostate cancer, and David endowed millions of dollars to institutions that may find a cure one day. Just too late for him. He was a chemical engineer, so he gave money to PBS and others to improve science education. I guess he liked ballet, so he renovated the New York City's premier ballet theater. It's kind of like a rich guy supporting the opera: Nobody but the rich attend, but that's what they like so that's where their money goes.

I wonder if his wife and kids are going to go a bit more liberal with their charities, like Rupert Murdock's kid? BTW, his wife is just 57 and much more into charity and the arts than he was.

Valerie Harper died this morning (Friday 8/30/2019) in Los Angeles.

She did a wide variety of roles, including a critically acclaimed sendup of Talulah Bankhead, on stage but was best known as Mary Richards' sidekick Rhoda Morganstern on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

She was eighty years young and she squeezed an extra eleven years out of a cancer diagnosis and a three months to live death sentence.

T. Boone Pickens, oil man, corporate raider and philanthropist, died Wednesday at age 91 of natural causes.

T. Boone Pickens, the ‘Oracle of Oil,’ corporate raider and billionaire philanthropist

Quote:
“Yes, I’m for Donald Trump,” Pickens declared in May 2016. “I’m tired of having politicians as president of the U.S. Let’s try something different.”

I guess we'll never hear if he remained satisfied with his choice.

T. Boone Pickens
Quote:
Now, don’t for a minute think I’m being morbid. Truth is, when you’re in the oil business like I’ve been all my life, you drill your fair share of dry holes, but you never lose your optimism. There’s a story I tell about the geologist who fell off a 10-story building. When he blew past the fifth floor he thought to himself, “So far so good.”

That’s the way to approach life. Be the eternal optimist who is excited to see what the next decade will bring. I remain excited every day, engaged and thrilled in the office and on the road. I thrive on that activity, and I'm going to stick to it, no matter the setback. And I am grateful to have such a strong support network that makes it all the more easy.

Thanks T. Boone Pickens for being an optimist!

Well, we're all going to die in the end, so I think you need to think that way. I'm not saying you should not plan for the end, but it's just silly to say: "Let's get it over with."

RIP Eddie Money - 1949-2019

His grandfather, father and brother were NYPD.
Eddie went through the training program but changed his mind and hit the streets from the very beginning as a singer, moving to the SF Bay Area in 1968.

He died this morning from complications of Stage 4 esophageal cancer and a recent bout of pneumonia from a recent cardiac surgery.

While I can't say I was a dedicated hardcore fan, a couple of his songs are part of the soundtrack of my life so he'll be missed.

A warning I saw that Rod Stewart has been battling prostate cancer for three years. Years of sex, drugs, and rock & roll are tough a body.

No, sex, drugs, and rock & roll don't have anything to do with prostate cancer. But the excessive use of them takes a toll on a body. I might not have had the sex life ol' Rod the bod did but I did have more than my share of drugs. I did because I worked in a rock & roll bar where even in July there was plenty of snow.

My sister died on Sunday, from a very rare, extremely aggressive form of ovarian cancer. One month from first symptom to final breath. She had a difficult childhood, but made the best of it: Math degree, taught elementary school and later Middle School math. Programmer at the Navy Electronics Lab. Married an upstanding Naval Officer, and had two children.

One of her elementary school students was inspired by her so much, he named a character in his Disney show Recess, after her. That character is the only nice, sane teacher at the elementary school.

He named a character...you're saying one of her students went on to be a mover and shaker at Disney. Tell us the name of the character and from now on, when we think of that character, we will think of your dear sister.

Is this her character?

Quote:
Miss Grotke (voiced by Allyce Beasley) is the 4th grade teacher of the main cast. She is known for her mild manner, yet eccentric personality, basically being that of a hippie, including her vocabulary. She is well loved by her students, especially for her tendency to stick up for their rights and encourages them to express themselves. Her dialogue establishes her as an advocate for the environment and race/gender rights. She also moonlights as a magician.

I am so sorry to hear of her passing.
One month, that is astoundingly cruel.
Our prayers of support to you and her husband and family.

Yes, that is the character. He wasn't a Disney employee and it wasn't a Disney produced show, but it was carried on the Disney channels. My sister was a little disturbed that he made her Black, but it fit the character's personality better.

>One month, that is astoundingly cruel.

At least it was fast. Most cancer deaths take a very long time. Thank you for your thoughts.

The music world is mourning the passing of eighty year-old Ginger Baker, who helped revolutionize the role of percussion in rock decades ago as the heart of the rock supergroup "Cream", featuring Ginger, bassist Jack Bruce and guitarist Eric Clapton.

Your sister is not gone, she will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Yes, she had quite a memorial service. I had no idea so many people knew and appreciated her. I worry about her husband. Both of his daughters live far away and have started their own families. The one in the Bay Area has been coming down here on weekends. Hopefully, he will spend time with each of them on a regular basis.

Last Friday, we went with John to see her get cremated. Seems a little ghoulish to keep the body around for that long. I guess I prefer the Jewish idea of having everything done within three days.

Elijah Cummings
(January 18, 1951 – October 17, 2019)

The son of sharecroppers, Cummings rose to become one of the most prominent Democratic members of the House. A former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, he was known for his dedication to Civil Rights and his dogged tenacity in his role on the House Oversight Committee.

Although House Oversight is one of the panels in the current impeachment probe investigating President Donald Trump, and was active in investigating the Trump administration well before impeachment, Cummings would frequently go out of his way to inform reporters of the committee’s other work, including its focus on combatting the opioid crisis.

Hey, Ardy! Yeah, Golem backed me up on a wacko right-wing blog many years ago, much to his derision. It didn’t do any good there, but was confirmation that not all righties have lost their marbles.

Yes, unusual in that respect.
I must say I have been profoundly astonished... ok, disturbed by how many people with presumed integrity (never mind intelligence) have abandoned so called principals upon which they have sanctimoniously admonished the world for years.... decades. I just read a post where a conservative suggested making nice with Putin... just to annoy liberals. Beyond appalling, It is very sad .

Yes, apparently Putin is rehabilitated now because he's no longer a communist, despite the fact that he was the head of the KGB and continues to murder anybody he doesn't like anywhere in the world. The US's biggest adversary now is Bernie Sanders!

Details...details. It's all about owning the Libs now. Odd that Conservatives have taken to publicly proclaiming owning other human beings. coffee

Actually not, they have historically always supported owning other human beings. Hmm
