Disclaimer - I am the descendent of four immigrants and the ex-wife of another.

The Lazarus poem ("Give me your tired, etc...") has no legal standing so far as I know. It carries the same sort of mythic characterization as "America the Beautiful" or "This Land is Your Land."

Cuccinelli added a restriction to the poem's welcome: it is for people who can "stand on their own two fee" and "not become a public charge." This has caused a minor hubbub. Cuccinelli might have had better timing.

Historically, immigrants have been most welcome when they WERE poor and hungry, because they provided cheap labor. Is the reaction mostly sentimental - a question of what we'd like to believe rather than what is/has been? Is it simply a realistic reflection of our attitude towards immigrants - generally unwelcoming, for whatever reason? Ot does it indicate a real change?

Many people were upset by his, to paraphrase, “it was about Europeans (WHITE) subject to an unfair class system”. As offensive as that was and coupled with the suggestion a class system doesn’t exist in the good ol’ USA, I found the be immediately “ready to stand on their own two feet (monied)” comment just as offensive. Maybe offensive is the wrong word...maybe troubling.

The supposed ‘land of opportunity’ has the ability to allow those in need to work towards standing on their own two feet. Few run away from home if it is the perfect place where they are already allowed to make their stand. Few of the “un”monied, or those coming from homes where a “useful” education or trade are not available, come ready to jump in with the requisite means to invest in this corporate country. But this country has the means to support their growth in that direction, that is if we stop pushing our USA thumb down on them to ensure they don’t succeed.

Senator Grassley’s comments are just as troubling, suggesting poverty is a poor choices result. “I think not having the estate tax recognizes the people that are investing,” Grassley said in an interview last week, “as opposed to those that are just spending every darn penny they have, whether it’s on booze or women or movies.”

Iowans do a lot of things right; Grassley isn't one of them.

Did that Cuccinelli bastard actually deface the plaque?
Trying to find out and coming up with nothing, so I figured it was just a tweet storm of his.
Please tell me didn't graffitti his piss all over Lady Liberty.

When you have someone who is so obviously woefully unqualified to be President, it is beyond peradventure that they will appoint the least qualified miscreants to support and advise them. So it is with Trump, Miller and Cuccinelli. Dregs will be dregs. But they are boueyed by an entire apparatus of the misbegotten. It's called "the Republican Party".

There is an attitude that pervades the entire party, exemplified in leadership, that human beings don't matter. What matters is money and power. Generate money, come from money, have money (no matter whose or how gotten), and you are "in the club". Power is to be taken by any means and maintained at all cost. Money makes that possible. Manipulate the tax code, gerrymander the system, suppress opposition, abuse prerogatives and position - lie, cheat, steal - it doesn't matter, so long as one "wins".

I like to think the jig is up, that the overt machinations have given them away and the populace will be so revolted that they'll revolt, but I no longer have confidence that is possible. The system is so corroded and its minions so corrupt that we may no longer have any influence over it. Cuccinelli, rather than an exemplar of the worst of the worst to be reviled and shunned, may instead be a glimpse at our future. God, please make it stop! Ebenezer, it is not too late! Wake up!

I suppose we need a big Christian revival in this country, so the voters stop electing miscreants who are obviously Hell-bound or actually allied with Satan.
