As Ujest pointed out, Social Security is the easiest of our Socialist Programs to fix. But because of Republican intransigence and greed it hasn't happened yet and may never happen.

And if that doesn't happen, neither will expanded healthcare, nor a living wage, nor any assistance for student debt. But there will be new billionaires crowned every day who will be awarded tax free private jets and yachts.

Oh absolutely. Centrists won't bring anything up for a vote because Republicans will vote it down. It's a bipartisan agreement that has gone on for years.

The solution is simple and plain - become a billionaire.

That's what we need: A massive wealth redistribution program. Hell, we are the richest country in the world. There is no excuse for all citizens not to be billionaires! grin

Social security has one main problem. Addons which are not really covered by payroll deductions but simply added which brought gov into a well designed system. I think that what is being discussed here is yet more addons (stuff gov gets to pay for). I consider this kind of stuff not helpful. If folks want to have gov pay for stuff that's fine with me but don't mess with a system that I pay into that actually works.

I am also for specific taxes to deal with specific things. Gas taxes, for instance, are supposed to only be used for transportation stuff. I am not sure that holds true anymore. Its kinda like state taxes where there always seems to be the "General Fund" which administrations kinda get to do with what they damned well want. In Washington state we used to have a Fish and Wildlife completely paid for by hunting permits, etc. The elected saw that they had lots of money to pay for their services so they took all that income, put it into the general fund then took over running, and paying for, fish and wildlife. Now fish and wildlife can no longer afford enough hired help to actually do their jobs. One can only wonder if there are such instances when it comes to the feds but, I suspect there are.

Medicare is another one that, in theory, was paid for by payroll deductions. This one, however, never did pay for itself and the deductions were more of a joke than anything else. I remember telling my elected that they were simply not taking enough to actually pay for the service. Their reply was silence and continued addons to medicare which further put it into the hole. Now, I think, its good for the next 8 years and then.................
