The National Rifle Association acted as a “foreign asset” for Russia leading up to the 2016 election, according to a report by Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee.

An 18-month investigation into the NRA’s Russia ties by the committee’s minority staff, which reviewed more than 4,000 pages of NRA records, found that NRA leaders promised Russians access to U.S. officials in exchange for Russian business.
...
During the NRA’s 2016 outreach to the Russians, an arm of the group that is not required to disclose its donors spent a record $30 million helping to elect President Trump, more than three times as much as it spent supporting Republican nominee Mitt Romney in 2012.

The Republican rebuttal is .... wait for it ... there is nothing there.

It would be a tough spin for most folks, but Trump supporters ate it up hook, line, and anchor around their necks

You've got to keep in mind that Putin's main goal is not to elect Trump. It's to screw with us enough to diminish our influence all over the world. Supporting Trump did that exceptionally well. But if a totally-corrupt idiot Democrat comes along, Putin will support him.

Yes on all counts, plus there's that whole effort to sow total distrust in all American institutions wholesale, which is the other equally important aspect of Russian interference.
Overseas Russia sends "little green men"...something they can't do here. So instead they send "virtual armies" of little green men.

And so far it's been working very well, because they captured an entire political party, one that was ripe for the capturing.

When your Party is all about self-interest, it's amazing how cheap members sell out their country. That's the biggest surprise about Russian covert ops: They really do it on the cheap. Most Russian spies would actually make more getting a real job. Their payouts are pitiful.

The Russian spies are on the take too y'know. Like almost everybody these days they need two jobs to pay the bills. I imagine that they sell access to the oligarchs wherever they go.
