"War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small 'inside' group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes."

Mebbe a follow on should be ‘why do we elect these sh!thogs that vote for war?

I guess my choice of the Eisenhower quote put the focus on war, but what I was thinking about that spurred the post was what appears to be a general attraction to arguing, partisanship, divisiveness, and hatred found throughout human cultures.

For instance, I find it troubling that it is standard practice for politicians to state in strongest terms, "I will fight for you when I'm in office!" I don't know that I want to send people to run the government who have pledged to fight when they get into power. Of course, that is a necessary marketing ploy on their part - the sad thing being if they don't take the stance of being a "fighter" they will be seen as "un-charismatic".

I think that humanity has a predilection for fighting.

We're animals. We're vicious and we're territorial.

White folks are particularly nasty. They migrated north and had to become hoarders to survive, this hoarding led to greed and conquest.

Then along came television and the internet to spread incendiary propaganda.

Brothers fight with brothers friends become enemies and the oligarchs skim the cream off the top leaving everyone else to fight for the scraps.

Maybe instead of Capitalism and Socialism and Democracy as societal models, we should look at a form of government designed on the principles of a well-managed zoo?

Because the "Us versus Them" mentality is part of human nature and has been ever since mankind consisted of tribes of hunter/gathers.
