Turkish Air Base Home of 50 US Nukes as Dispute Heats Up

Quote:

Officials from the State Department and Energy Department, which manages Washington's nuclear arsenal, met at the weekend to consider how they might retrieve an estimated fifty tactical nuclear weapons held at the site, according to The New York Times.

NYT

Those weapons, one senior official said, were now essentially Erdogan’s hostages. To fly them out of Incirlik would be to mark the de facto end of the Turkish-American alliance. To keep them there, though, is to perpetuate a nuclear vulnerability that should have been eliminated years ago.

“I think this is a first — a country with U.S. nuclear weapons stationed in it literally firing artillery at US forces,” Jeffrey Lewis of the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies wrote last week.

I wonder what this is going to do to Turkey's position in NATO?

I wondered the same thing.

Isn't carving up foreign lands illegal? Maybe Russia and Turkey are simply laying boundaries of influence. Sounds like a euphemism for stealing land a la Crimea and Ukraine.

And I wonder when this boneheaded mistake is going to join the other high crimes and misdemeanors in the impeachment inquiry?

He abandoned 50 tactical nuclear weapons in enemy territory. That should go down as one of the greatest military blunders in history.

You would have had a great time there. We used to go there quite often but erdogan changed that for us and we haven't been there since he got elected.

Its a shame because there are some pretty neat things to see and do there and the food is GREAT!

There are very few places in the world that I would like to see.
Istanbul is one of them.

Even before Crimea, Russia was doing that all the time. I saw some documentary a while back where they moved the border fence in the middle of the night in Chechnya. People went to sleep near the border and when they woke up they were suddenly Russian! It was so blatant it was funny.

Israel has been a dab hand at stealing land too.

We reward them with Billion$ in weapons and "aid".
