We got Western Diamondbacks and Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes on my spread. Out on the property, I used to just let them slither off, but the ones near the house I would decapitate with a shovel. But now we have some dogs who like to hunt, so I do any that I find. Paid for 4 veterinary treatments so far at $2000 a piece! Fortunately the score is currently about me 20 snakes 0, so far.

One good thing about the coyotes around here, is that they take care of the carcasses. Just toss them over the fence and they are gone the next morning.

My little piece of the swamp is overrun with indigo snakes. One of their favorite foods is other snakes. So I haven't seen a rattlesnake or a moccasin for years.

The big snakes are south of me, unfortunately Trump Organization has the market for snake oil tied up down there.

Indigos are gorgeous snakes. I love them. Like the King snakes we love that eat baby rattlers.

The ones you really need to watch out for in Florida are the Eastern Diamondbacks. They get really big, for a pit viper, and their venom can paralyze you. I read a story about an Eastern expert who went out on an island to do a population survey of them. He got bitten, had to motorboat over to the land and crawl to his jeep. He could barely drive it to the next town with one foot working to get help. Respiratory failure was next. It was a close thing. Stupid to do that by yourself.

Way back, years ago, before the black snakes took over, I killed one 6'11" in my front yard. They've always been fairly scarce though, they keep mostly to the underbrush so you seldom see them. Boots are always a good idea if you plan to go slogging through the jungle.

If you leave a rattlesnake alone, he'll leave you alone. Water moccasins, on the other hand, will go out of their way to attack you just out of meanness.

From what I hear, rattlesnakes are a bigger problem out west just by their sheer numbers.

I've lived in the intermountain west all my life, from northern Idaho to southwest New Mexico, and tramped around the wilds a good deal. I have seen maybe six rattlesnakes in all that time, though I only recall four, and one of those was a dead one in North Dakota. In every case, we just respectfully avoided each other.

The most horrible case I ever heard of was a family outing at a campground with an outhouse. A young girl saw a rattler go under the outhouse and Dad couldn't tolerate the idea of his little girl getting bit in a private area, so he got a can of gas and poured it down the hole, then tossed a match in. Blew the whole thing to shiit smithereens!

Turns out the rattler had already gone out the other side...

I dunno...I seen all about them rattlesnake roundups and such where weird cowboy types collect them by the thousands...

Couple weeks ago I went out to the chicken coop after dark to get the eggs, opened the little door to the laying box, and reached in and grabbed a snake.

I turned loose pretty quick because I know what a snake feels like. I dunno if you're familiar with snakes but for the most part, they all will bite you if you f*ck with them. Yellow rat snakes really love eggs so I didn't even think about it being poisonous. I reached in with the handle of my cane and dragged his ass outa there.

I suppose if you make a thing out of hunting them, they can be found. But I have never known them to be much of a problem. Mostly dogs get bit around here that are running around loose.

What is it with dogs and snakes? Anytime my dog sees one he tries to bite it. Tried to bite a little alligator too. I never taught him that sh*t.
