No need to teach them to hunt: That's an instinct. You have to teach them NOT to hunt. We've paid for several rattlesnake avoidance classes. All the neighbors with dogs get together and use our vacant lot. A guy brings shock collars and snakes with tight hoods over their heads. He sets the snakes out and then walks each dog around the course. When they go to investigate a snake, he shocks the crap out of them. I've actually seen one dog do a back flip! Seems to work, at least for the smart dogs. The dummies got the antivenin, twice!
