This has been under test and construction for several years now. They are cleaning the ocean AND rivers. They now seem to feel they are actually starting to feel they have equipment that is working! Pretty interesting! (many have lost faith but they seem to be continuing and now starting to actually succeed)

Color me unimpressed. There is plastic now at the bottom of the Mariana Trench. Mount Everest is covered in tons of garbage and human feces.

Tens of thousands of these vessels and contraptions wouldn't make a dent in the mess we have made.

Somebody needs to design a glacier and slope capable remote-controlled robot for cleaning up Mt. Everest and other similar peaks. Turn loose several hundred and let people operate them remotely via computer screen. Who wouldn't want to say they helped clean poop off of Mt. Everest? It would be like a massive multiplayer video game.

Actually they figure they are going to be able to cleanup 90% of the plastic in the next 5 years. I will be interested to see what they plan to do with it. On the 12th they are, in theory, going to show us.

I also find it interesting that this is not an American effort.

Also thought their river cleanup machine was pretty interesting. It skims stuff from the top of the water.

I have no idea what they plan to do with what they gather. If they had a smr to generate a heated environment they might be able to melt it all down and then recast it as building blocks for whatever that would last forever!

Really, melting it into big Lincoln logs people can build houses out of would be terrific. Some kind of interlocking pseudo-concrete blocks. And having a lot of non-melting chips in the plastic would not be a problem, because that would make it a composite material, like fiberglass.

And they could power the process with concentrated sunlight because it would not require really high temperatures.

sunlight might even work although if you are going to cast big blocks they would probably need quite a bit of heat to do the job. I am not even sure they are all meltable.

The interesting thing is that my plan would cost millions or a billion - yours would be the right price.

Last time I was in Tibet I noticed that just about everybody had a cooking reflector (aluminum, I think) and they were CHEAP! I wonder why we don't use them (they work really well!)

Could make BIG legos?

Anyway, tomorrow we will, in theory, see how they are going to deal with all the crap they are finding...........

In the North Pacific, a gyre or slowly swirling whirpool of ocean currents collects plastic debris. It is estimated to be twice the size of France and Charles Moore, the oceanographer who discovered it has predicted that it will double in size in the next 10 years if we donít change our ways. It is not exactly a nice neat island that we can tidy away, itís more like a ginormous plastic soup made of confetti like fragments of plastic. It has been imagined that it would take 67 ships 1 year to clean up less than 1% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Deal is...we can't clean it up. We have to stop adding to it.

Kinda nothing, really.......... (but they continue to at least try. their current goal is to remove 50% in 5 years)
