When the Earth was assumed to be the center of the universe, an all-seeing God in the sky directly above us seemed to be reasonable. Especially when there was no communication or even awareness of how many of us were here on the planet. Now that we know there are literally billions and billions of other planets with more or less the same physics and chemistry, it is preposterous that One God is overseeing all of that, and yet has the time or attention to see within all our hearts when we have the odd impure thought. The theory is just ridiculous from a mathematical perspective. We can only hold at most around 7 thoughts in our brains at the same time. Any being that could hold billions of thoughts simultaneously could not be the model for humanity. (Made in his image...)

If there ever was such a omnipresent and omnipotent being, it would have been in the center of the universe at the time of the big bang. It's either long gone or spread out so thin by now it's practically non-existent. All that's left is the whisper of the Big Bang radiation when astronomers aim their radio-telescopes at nothing.

This doesn't mean we can't have ethics and morality. It just means all the church's dogma is 1000+ year old nonsense. Like humours of the blood or phlogiston. We have much better theories now.

You may be absolutely right about the whole thing. However, that being said. True believers get a huge boost with their beliefs and there are a LOT of true believers. It, basically, don' make no difference. The simple fact is that they believe and that's that. An interesting aside is that the United States is becoming full of less and less believers (which is pretty interesting all by itself).

Ethics and morality have absolutely nothing to do with Ethics and Morality (well done, you almost got me going! <G>)

The simple fact that God and Religion have a LOT to do with Regulation and Money! (couldn't resist)

I'm a pagan. I worship the Earth as a living sentient goddess. Mother Earth, Father Sun and Daughter Moon. All we are and all we have is directly attributable to them. While logic and science tell me that the underworld probably doesn't exist, I find it more spiritually fulfilling to go ahead and believe in it a little bit. I believe in the local gods like Coyote, Raven, and Machabou who rule the North American continent. Over in Europe Odin holds sway and Loki plays the part of trickster. Eastern Europe has a different collection of them.

To my notion Yaweh is just a greedy, jealous, assh*le of a god who mostly rules over a bunch of sand. The other gods just shake their heads and laugh at him.

More valid than some 4000 and 2000 year old paternalistic nonsense, I believe. The key to not being a moron is to think of religion as a valid means of thinking about all the stuff that science does not concern itself with. If you pit religion against science, the cognitive dissonance will destroy you after a while. Just look at Galileo's persecutors, or those Bible Thumpers who need antibiotics to survive an infection. Even the current Pope says evolution is real!

My pediatrician has a plaque on his wall: "You don't need to vaccinate all your kids: Just the ones you want to keep.
