What I'm sayin' here is that if capitalism survives it will be alone on a hot dead planet.

More likely one that's frozen except for a desert around the equator.

If it's not frozen, the angry rich can create their own walled garden festooned with preatorian guards to keep the angry poorz out, and they won't need to build a throne in space.
If it's frozen, get ready for the real life version of "Elysium".

Is that where the planet is ultimately headed? I admit I've never looked that far into the future. If there are a few survivors then perhaps in 10,000 years or so it will thaw and capitalism can rise again to the top of the economic food chain.

The models I've seen show the Atlantic Conveyor slowing down. If that's accurate - and this is under pretty heavy debate, though with most of the naysayers working for Exxon - then in fact we will quite suddenly have a big freeze.

The good news, is we have demonstrated our ability to survive that. The bad news is, civilization has not demonstrated that ability.

And, as you say, if civilization doesn't survive, we lose our history and do all of this again in 8000 years or so.

The bad of Capitalism is easily defined. The problem isn't Capitalism, however, but EXTREME Capitalism which centers on the rich getting richer, the poor poorer, irresponsibility, and greed. This is just a stage in virtually any and all systems of government. Each and every one of these systems tend, over time, to go too damned far. It seems to be the way of things. People who started Communism, for instance, were actually thinking of the working class when it all started. Russia had a revolution because most of their workers were serfs treated like slaves! We all know how that one turned out.

All that being said Capitalism has also been responsible for moving more people out of destitution in the history of the the world! The trick, however, seems to be to keep Capitalism regulated. Norther Europe, for instance, has done a really good job of that. They have lots of millionaires, not so many billionaires, and lots of tax supported institutions (socialist in everything but name).

Right now we have extremist Capitalists in charge. They are trying, very hard, to remove most regulations, public schools, and all government services such as healthcare, etc. These are the dreams of extreme capitalism and the first time, in my lifetime, that they have been about to get this far. I think this has happened because of their religious affiliations. They have gotten together to destroy what most of us have defined as the the social order. Yep, what they are doing is destroying the social order and, if they get their way, we will be back to the upper class and the serf class with little in between. I think our main problem are people who are determined to get their way or the highway and unable to simply think it through, and be happy to deal with each other in the best interest of the whole.

It used to be that the goal of most went something like; "Socially liberal and economically conservative". Now we have something that goes like; "Socially conservative and economically irresponsible" and its bringing us low on a whole number of ways.

The Righteous Right of the extreme left are a very good example of that and that's unfortunate. How does it go, something like; "If we don't stick together we shall assuredly hang separately" ....

I resemble that remark!

Give me any candidate on the ticket but Biden and I'm blue no matter who.

Ya gotta draw the line somewhere though and neither Biden nor Trump will get my vote. There are a ton of people I wouldn't vote for. Maybe that's not true for you.

I'm going to walk that back ever so slightly...

If he picked a (sufficiently) progressive running mate I would fill in the box by his name. I can't think of anyone that might be though and AOC is too young for the job.

Not possible in the America we have now. If America was not awash in guns, it might be. But if things get bad enough, the surfs turn outlaw and take what they need. And yes, you can shoot the ones out front storming your security gate, but there are some smart ones scaling the back wall and looting your mansion. Government regulation of capitalism and limitation of income inequality keep that from happening. Some rich people have figured that out. Some, not so smart.

We now have the America that would have been thought not possible just 10 years ago. If capitalism doesn't get reined in it WILL be possible!

And what is it that reigns in capitalism?

Socialism.
