Now is the Spring of our discontent, and with that

WELCOME

to the Reader Rant RoundTable for Spring 2020

The only thing to write about is the thing that occupies everyone's mind right now.

Normally we'd all be seeing the signs of Spring approaching.
Snow would be melting up North and in the Midwest, young folks would be flirting in the parks and at the lakes, kids in school would be planning their prom and graduation and overall economic activity would be cruising along like a favorite hot rod on a country road.

Not this time.
I wish I had something better, even some dark humor.
I don't, but if anyone else does, please feel free to add.

Management came by at 8 am to send everyone who wasn't already working at home, home to work. I hung-around to 11:45 am. I vanpool.

Working from home this afternoon was meh. Have to remote in to my computer at work and take it from there. Can't have as many windows open either. Like three maximum. I was on the phone to I.S. once an hour. I remembered to clean my memory and history before attempting to do anything work related. I didn't remember to peruse my crowded desktop icons and had some sexy and embarrassing screen grabs.

Oops. gobsmacked

Do you let them remotely operate your computer? As long as you don't have remote desktop enabled, your desktop should be secure. Now you know what it's like to be married! I keep my desktop very clean.

I.S. had to take over my computer today because one piece of software that I use at work, the links wouldn't work. I.S. cleaned the cache, and yes, a pin on Safari popped up which I quickly closed.

Got rid of all desktop pics and the two pins on Safari. smile

Costco has suspended their famous return policy until further notice. No, you cannot bring back seven giant packs of 48-count toilet paper because you bought 12 giant packs of it and you now realize that you bought 3 year's worth. Same with your hand sanitizer and disinfection wipes. smile

...and stop bringing-back your formerly live Christmas tree in March because it died. coffee

WA state Governor Inslee is closing down the state effective Wednesday for two weeks. It was bound to happen. Hmm

Anybody ever watch Celebrity Apprentice, starring Donald Trump? I watched all of a minute before changing channels - I wasn't a fan of fake 'reality' as entertainment.

Still not a fan of it as government...

Why drinking water? There is zero suggestion our water districts will fail in the short term. A lot of the treatment procedures are automatic, even if some people are in quarantine or dead.

Hoarding enough of anything beyond a 34 day from now supply is stupid. Almost all of us will be dead or recovered by then. Trump is getting his wish. Just not yet.

Jeff: Daryl WILL be getting Medi-Cal, we finally got that worked out, thank God.

Indeed. Congratulations! California's Medicaid is very good. The only problem I have seen with it is it's very difficult to convince them you have enough income to get off it, and get into subsidized ACA.

The problem WAS that we couldn't keep Dr. Reardon, Daryl's cardiologist at UCLA but they called and said it was worked out finally.
PS: They're hating the fact that all these ins co's are playing Russian Roulette, so I imagine that they finally faced the fact that in the end most of their high risk patients who aren't millionaires were going to wind up on Medi-Cal anyway.

Now the paperwork begins....AGAIN.

We are all contestants on "The Apprentice" now, and I for one want to know how that equals running a country.
I want to know how supporters think that can lead to anything but blood if it keeps up long enough, with them being the first to draw it.
They won't be able to help themselves, they won't be able to curb their maniacal justification for it.

They're making up justifications for it right now.
Justification for it will be the cornerstone of their demand that the monster be reelected.

Good news for Greger. Even if your "income" is 100% Social Security, you will still receive that $1,200.00 check.

I have been pretty busy, and have only been on the other OTHER board with any frequency.

I don't watch television, much less Fox News or any of that rot.

So it's always a bit of a shock to see how delusional people are over the pandemic.

Just went to get the mail out of the PO Box, and to the ATM to get some cash: Gloves and mask. Avoided going in until nobody else was there. Put the cash and mail in a plastic bag to sit for 4 days, along with the gloves. Wife and I are very familiar with sterile procedure.

That is basically what we've been doing (the gloves and mask part) but thankfully I ordered a UV-C lamp a while ago, so outside stuff gets put under the lamp for a couple of hours.

A plane has five passengers on board: Donald Trump, the Pope, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Hillary Clinton, and Greta Thunberg

The plane is about to crash and there are only 4 parachutes.

Dr Fauci: “I need one! I have to help develop a cure for the global health crisis that is Covid-19!”
He takes one and jumps.

The Pope: “I need one! I have to help spiritually guide people through the global health crisis that is Covid-19!”
He takes one and jumps.

Donald Trump: ‘‘I need one! I’m the smartest man in the USA!”
He takes one and jumps.

Hillary Clinton says to Greta Thunberg, "You take the last parachute. My public life is over and yours has only begun.”

Greta Thunberg: "Don’t worry, there are two parachutes left. The smartest man in the USA took my backpack."

A plane has five passengers on board on the day before Election Day: Donald Trump, the Pope, Dr. Anthony Fauci, Glenn Greenwald and Joe Biden.

Glenn Greenwald secretly hides the last parachute and gives Joe Biden his backpack, then jumps with the last remaining parachute so that he can survive and scream at everyone for being neoliberals while Trump enjoys a second term and then names himself President For Life.

i'm working from home. Have to "check-in" hourly via a Google Doc and input what I did the previous hour. Have a daily department conference call at 11:30 a.m. I have to send my manager a "good morning" and "good evening" email when I start work and end work.

I'd rather be back at the office, thanks.

Honestly, I believe it was because I'm from a different tribe than the moderator involved. That, of course, was not the excuse used. I made a joke about Trump, but I invoked a moderator's name who was participating in the thread.

The moderator in question was complaining in the thread about derisive language being used against the president. (She swears she's not a fan, all evidence to the contrary.) One of the other posters pointed out that Trump uses derisive language against perceived opponents:
Quote:
And calling him a snake, lol.

What a petty, vindictive, low-brow, small man we have for a prez.
---End Quote---
Don't tell that to *nota*, she'll have to give him a penalty for ad hominem attacks against the Governors. Oh wait...
The last was my comment.

I was dinged for "discussing moderator's actions in a forum". Now, in any rational world, what is the object of the joke? Is it "moderator's actions," or the language of the president?

I have "known" many right wing (im)moderators who are rabid free speech freedom fighters (for the rights of their favorite propagandists) who yet see their status as Lord and Master of the Blog as giving them the pure right to authoritarian censorship. The irony is always lost on them.

Hell, I even got banned from a leftie blog for getting too witty with the dimwits! Tolerance is not generally a top human quality.

Not to disrupt the discussion, but I've been working remotely with a smart phone and I-pad for about three weeks. Got an email from corporate last Monday saying we had until midnight Tuesday to get anything out of our office so I go in and get my laptop, which generally stays docked. I have converted my man cave into a corona work cave- complete with desk, putting green and dart board. HDTV of course. Needless to say, my putting stroke has improve exponentially and a dart in my hand is no longer a weapon of mass destruction!

Used to ride a dirt bike for fun. Love golf too. I'm older now and couldn't keep from acting a fool on the bike. Can't ride a bike forever, but I figure I can play golf as long as my health holds up. I was one tree away from screwing up my golf forever so I sold all toys and am sticking to golf- and darts. Practicing my hobbies while working ain't a bad life. Actually, golf is still doable. Ya have 4/group, you're outside and you can do the social distancing thing- provided everyone has their own cart. I would put fishing in with relatively safe activities as well. but me no fish.

Golf carts really changed the nature of the game. Used to be you had to walk the full course. Rich guys got a caddy to carry their clubs, but you still had to walk. Now you can just lash your portable oxygen tank on the cart and hobble around. I wonder when the'll put IV poles on all the carts? I played just long enough to get a hole in one. Figured I couldn't improve on that, so I never went back.

Oh, I've seen the oxygen tanks, no IV's yet. Just figure life expectancy was better on a golf course than on a dirt bike. BTW, there are still many that walk and carry, or walk and pull a cart. It's really good exercise.
On a serious note, My sister, who has been in the music business in Nashville for years, just texted me that John Prine's family has just gone public that he is in critical condition with signs of the C virus. Think I completely wore out at least three cassette tapes of "Prime Prine" in middle and high school. His anthology is my favorite though. My thoughts go out to the poet.

No fishing for me. I've got two bikes, one a big roadie, and one a small dual sport. Greger got a chance to meet Blackie, the little one, because the only way to get to his place was down a sand road. I am going through my toys, reluctantly, as I try to start removing things from my life that I don't use, and have to admit I won't anymore - like my skis. I haven't golfed in a few years. No excuse, just haven't. I've been a serial obsessive, so I have gear for just about everything that I "got into" - scuba, softball, golf, bowling, motorcycling, skiing. One by one, they'll have to be abandoned.

Yeah, I used to be in to road bikes. Last one was an Ultra Classic. In 04, me and three friends left west Tennessee for the west coast. We got to San Francisco as fast as we could, spent a couple days seeing the sites, then picked up Hwy 1. What a ride. rode all the way up to Washington state (101 at that point I think), then headed east to Rapid City for the rally in Sturgis. finally got back. it was a 5862 mile walk about and I completely wore out a brand new rear tire- due to Hwy 1. I sat on my ass every way a man can. Sold it a year later and went back to my roots- the dirt bike- KTM-250. I used to ride with a group of guys that hair scramble in a league here. I just thought I could ride.... Anyway, it's gone now. No more toys for Livetoride, just my golf clubs.

I am hopeful that the news of his passing was false, as I've heard nothing on the news yet. I did get a text last night, but it wasn't from a family member. I have seen the statement the family put out about him being in critical care due to CV though.

I just found out that the news about Prine might be premature, but it will be a miracle of the highest order if he survives.
Livetoride, I'm going to put an EDIT on the obit just as a prayer that he makes it.
And if he doesn't, I'll remove the EDIT, hope that you don't mind.
So glad to see you here at The Rant again, by the way.

Yes, please do. I posted earlier that I had hopes that the news was false. You are correct, given his pre-existing condition(s), it would take a miracle.
Thanks for the kind words. It has been a while. Working from home does have its perks, but cabin fever is a bitch!

Texas Lt. Governor offered to sacrifice himself for the economy.
Quote:
“You know, Tucker, no one reached out to me and said, ‘As a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren?’” Patrick said. “And if that’s the exchange, I’m all in.”
My son had the perfect response: "If you're willing to die for the economy, how about something less drastic - like a universal basic income."

I was sharing with an acquaintance my favorite Ronald Reagan story:

When Reagan was Governor of California, some Black Panthers were open carrying assault rifles around Sack o' tomatoes (Sacramento). Low-and-behold, assault rifles were banned in California.

Now, suppose the African American community did America a solid and starting open carrying assault rifles on the daily. How soon would the good ol' white patriarchs in red states ban assault rifles?

I'm all in on old White Republicans politicians committing suicide on national TV to appease God somehow. Who knows, it might work. Of course, various economists have figured out an average human live is worth about 10 million dollars. So maybe we want to start at the top and work our way down, so we do the minimal amount of economic harm to the economy. Assuming that's what we are trying for, right?

The Lt. Governor and Glen Beck have volunteered to go first.

Ya know 0n December 26th, 2004 I read on this site from a Ham radio operator of a massive earthquake along the Pacific Rim. It was not on the news, I heard about it here first. (Don't recall the handle of the ranter back then) I believe that was on a Saturday so I went to church the next day- nothing. News had broke that hundreds were missing and feared dead. when it finally got real, the numbers climbed into the thousands.I decided to give church one more try- preacher said nothing. Meanwhile, a couple of very right wing Baptist preachers went public about why all those thousands of people were suddenly swept away- that area was a hot spot for homosexual couples and god was punishing them. That's when I lost my religion- if one can call a Methodist religious..... But if PIA's post is accurate, I might just start praying again. Have at it Lt Gov.
...And that's all I have to say about that!

Evangelicals are in a no-win situation here: Most of them went along with Trump's BS claims, so in turn they denied the virus even existed, claimed it was a Democratic plot against Trump, claimed it was just like the flu, claimed there were just 15 cases in America to be zero soon, claimed it was all under control, claimed God would protect them, etc. One preacher even had his congregation all get down and lick the floor.

Now they are expected to join the Mammon-worshipers and sacrifice themselves for the sake of the stock market. Wasn't it Jesus who drove the moneymen out of the temple? Is that why he ended up on the cross? Come on guys, how many commandments do you have to break before you see you are following a minion of Satan?

They'll just move on the next snake oil salesman without a word. They always seem to be looking for a new savior, a second coming, a true prophet for our times...the kind that the Bible tells them is always false.

A Tampa megachurch pastor was arrested today for holding services after being warned not to...

I was a little disappointed he failed to mention that comparing between the average vitamin D level of < 25 in Americans to somewhere in the 40-60 range, you get a 70% benefit in avoiding pulmonary infections. D modulates the immune response responsible for ARDS, along with a whole slew of other good things. It actually interacts with every cell in the body, because they all have Vitamin D receptors. It interacts with over 2000 different genes!

Everything he had to say was true, but there's a lot more information out there. The MedCram videos on YouTube are very detailed, and yet start from a pretty basic understanding of Biology. Dr. John Campbell videos on YouTube are very informative at a basic level for non-medical people. But I have to admit, this guy was pretty funny. No F-bombs or stories about pimps on the other videos.

I decided to just go ahead and believe what I wanted to believe. It's not like it makes much difference whether you believe in something or don't believe in something.

My people don't have a lot of rules and commandments. We have eight words.

If it harm none, do what ye will.

We also have something we call the rule of three. What you give comes back threefold. Be it good or bad.

Beyond that...pick a pantheon and have fun!

Had to run out and re-fill my meds today. Pharmacy is 30 minutes away in my home town. Being shut in like this, I am appreciative of the drive. I am an NPR junkie. Satellite radio is a must for me, as I usually travel for work. On the way back I was thrilled that Terry Gross, (Fresh Air) interviewed one of my favorite authors, Professor Bart Ehrman of UNC. I am an Ehrman fan. He is a stud when it comes to religious studies.

I don't understand the American fixation on toilet paper. I think it all has to do with our toilet training. We learned to use TP, and therefor anything else is unthinkable. Some would rather just burst their colon than do it without TP.

News, folks: Most of the human race does not have any TP. And they manage just fine. We used to: Remember the old timers talking about the Sears catalog nailed to the outhouse wall? You got reading material AND hygiene, all in one. Do you have a newspaper subscription? Is there a shower right next to the toilet?

If you use any kind of social media, the hashtag #BoycottTrumpBriefings is trending, and you can use it in a message to all the major networks, like

Quote:
@MSNBC @CBSNews @ABC @CNN - I won't tune in as long as you're broadcasting Trump's phony "press conferences".

They do sell some little bidet sprays that come out from under the seat, when you turn them on. That way you don't have to buy a whole separate bidet throne or find room for it in your bathroom. You just need to tap into the water supply under the sink, and you might want some mixing control so it's not too hot or cold.

Been working on the backyard fence as a social distancing hobby. It needed upgrading in order to keep the chickens and the Sulcata tortoise in, and the deer, coyotes, and javelina out.

Since I'm a dedicated CharMan I decided that instead of spending a thousand $mackers on high dollar exterior wood finish, I'd char the pine boards instead. It's easy to do and I'll get the whole fence done on about $30 worth of propane with a weed burner, in about 1/4 the time, too. Two things about charring wood for a finish; the char is a coating and a preservative; and the wood layer under the char is torrefied, which also reduces its susceptibility to weathering and rot.

Charring as a wood finish

Drove to home town today, just to get out. Called a buddy that works for that county to say hello and ended up helping him unload 11- 5 gallon buckets of hand sanitizer. Came out to be a little north of $27 per gallon. reasonable I thought. I'll bet you folks have heard way worse stories.
Jesus, I filled up my Jeep there for less than $25.00, and it was way close to empty. Think it was $1.38.9 per gallon. (what's with the .9 anyway) Only took a global pandemic to get us below $2.00 per gallon... I know, I know, OPEC vs Putin... Pandemic does have a voice in the decrease in petro though- a big voice..

Of course, your fire insurance company could think it's a bit suspect.

We had to go with California's fire insurance of last resort, when all the insurers decided not to cover anyone in the high fire danger area. They just did it by zip code and city limits. Never looked at our five acres cleared around the house. So the FAIR plan is a pool of those insurance companies that want to do business in the state, and the rates are based on actual fire danger, so we have a lower premium then we used to! They do send an inspector out to look at your house and objectively rate it so they can raise your rates if necessary. Our inspector came several days after California went on shutdown, so he just took one snapshot of the front of the house and that was it. I guess it proves he was here.

This gonna be my new ride! The RadBurro commercial delivery trike. Street and trail legal! Made in Seattle, I think. It's got plenty of power to get me around my hilly little town.

I've thought of getting a little scooter instead of another car.
I barely drive even twenty-thirty miles a week these days, even before the CV19 crisis. Ever since my camera eye (right eye) got that second floater I've been pretty much sidelined as a cinematographer, so I don't drive much except for groceries and errands.

Part of me just wants to get an old classic clunker and enjoy it and part of me thinks it's a silly idea, and that a scooter might be much more practical.

If you're tuned in LIVE, and you have cable or satellite, the networks are counting you as tuned in, and that tells them that Trump is getting high ratings.
Trump is using these conferences as Trump rallies.
He's even boasting about his high ratings, in the middle of a humanitarian disaster.
So do not tune in live, change the channel to anything BUT the Trump presser, and hopefully the networks will realize that the ratings are LOW, and they will begin to curtail these sh!t shows.
You can always tune in later when the news reruns the relevant clips, which they do, faithfully.

Agreed, but the idiotic statements/ramblings are better entertainment that anything the networks offer. "The Simpsons, Futurama" and that other s*** show just don't get it for me. Point well taken though.

I was thinking about getting Neflix again so I could stream The Witcher. They tell me it sticks to the books more than the games and I'm cool with that, I'd like to see the author rake in some zlotys because he didn't take the games seriously and sold the rights for nothing.

All I am saying is, wait till daily viewing becomes mandatory, via a social credit system similar to China's. Not tuned in? Oh well, your score just dropped ten points.
Want a better job? Permission to travel? Buy a nicer place?
Your social credit score determines all.

This is happening now overseas.
It starts with loyalty tests, and the first loyalty test reward system is our own TV ratings. Trump is bragging about how high his presser ratings are.
That's happening now, too.

So all one must do is hold off till he's off the air and hang on till the news re-runs them. Then the news show gets the ratings, instead of Trump.

I said I would never get a Smart Phone until the plan price point was $15.00/month. In the meantime, I'll just use my flip phone. Besides, strangers out there are more than willing to look something up for me when I show them my flip phone - so I really didn't need a Smart Phone. Hmm

Even though I said I wouldn't pull the trigger until $15.00/month, I acquiesced and said if the plans go to $20.00/month I'll do it.

Right now I pay $12.00/month for my flip on ATT. laugh

Welp, Consumer Cellular had a commercial over the weekend for $20.00/month 250 mins talk / 500MB data. I was about to get it when a friend of mine who has Cricket said go look at Cricket. So I did...and they have a $15.00/mo 2GB data plan with $5.00/month discount for auto-pay...so $10.00/month out the door. Such a deal!!!!! Bow No...seriously...such a deal!!!!!! smile

So I will be joining the ranks of you Smart Phone peeps when Cricket sends me the brand-new iPhone7 in the next day or two. cool

Yeah I wish I could migrate over to one of the old-folks services like Consumer or Cricket but I find I still need my unlimited data.
But 45 a month ain't bad.

Thing I'm griping about is, I don't want to give up my current phone with the removable battery, the removable SD card and all the ports (mine has HDMI out, earphone and USB) and the buttons.

Eventually it will die and I'll be forced to get a phone with NO buttons, a soldered in permanent battery and no ports.
Hate that...pay more for LESS.

Welp at work, I can join the Company network, so I don't need to use Cricket's data there, and at home I can use my router so I don't need Cricket's data at home.

And when I'm traipsing around the Sound, Xfinity has free wifi, so I won't need to use Cricket data when I'm out and about. I think I'm good with the plan I purchased. I did pay $199.00 for the iPhone7. Pro'lly coulda done better, but oh...well. Hmm

My wife and I have $15/month flips on my mom's Consumer Cellular unlimited data plan. She had one of their GrandPads that let me put in her allowed contacts and websites. Very nice for GrandMa's access once she is beyond the age that can detect scams and hustlers. Got to figure something else out now, because she died on Sunday.

My wife and I really hate smartphones: Too small with all those icons that have no labels. So we went back to $30 flip phones. I'll have to call Consumer Cellular tomorrow and see if we can change the plan around now that mom's gone.

BTW: Not Covid-19. Just all wore out.

Stephanie Grisham is out as White House Press Secretary

In NINE months, she never held a single press conference.
Now she's returning to her old position by Melania's side as her chief of staff and spokeswoman.

I use a smartphone. I'm clumsy and slow with it, I have huge hands and when I try to use the keyboard i press three keys at a time and it takes literally hours to type a brief text.

I can barely read anything on it without finding my strongest reading glasses. The font is set to "huge"...it isn't f*cking huge okay? It's tiny, it's like the fine print they always print the instructions for preparing packaged foods.

I can't use it at all while I'm driving. Gotta turn it on, unlock it, clear whatever screens you left up on it, tap the phone icon, tap the contacts button, scroll through the contacts, tap who you want to call, select phone or text....

I used to just grab the flip and mash two buttons without ever looking at it.

I'm trying to buy a Moto Z4 right now, upgrading from Moto G3. None are available. Probably made in China.

Jeffery you might like the Motorola lineup. They've got most of the features you want and their batteries are awesome.

I use Republic Wireless, they used to be the only ones that routed calls to wifi instead of cell towers. I've got no cell coverage out here so everything depends on wifi. I think all phones do that now...I dunno...?
They're $15 bucks a month and data's $5 a Gig.

Not if it's a flip phone.
I actually USE a lot of apps.
One of the apps I rely on the most is a handy codec guide for optimizing video for upload to YouTube, Vimeo, etc.

Another is a handy FTP directory with instructions on how to log on to trusted FTP sites. You have to get the logon and passwords from the owners but once you enter them they're all stored in one place.

Another is a ham radio programming widget that will program most modern handy-talkies for you so you don't have to manually enter 250 different frequencies.

Another is a built in spot lightmeter...no not nearly as good as a real light meter but for Mister Magoo, it's good enough.

Another fave is Keeper, which stores every password you will ever need. You can even extend Keeper to your browser!

There's a list of maybe 25 more but I'll spare you.
My non-pro fave is the built in TV/cable remote, which is a lifesaver if you can't find your remote in the middle of the night because your dog wanted to bury it in their bed across the room without letting you know.

I was actually kind of hopeful that SOMEONE would come out with a smartphone that had an HDMI INPUT so that you could feed it with whatever comes out of a modern camera, thus allowing you to use your phone as a portable livestreaming device but also allowing you to feed it with quality from a real camera.

Alas, looks like that's never going to happen! frown
Probably because there's already a ton of standalone portable livestream devices, but I just thought it would be nifty to combine it in a smartphone instead of lugging around another box.

Thanks for the notes of sympathy, guys. Mom was 91, nonambulatory, and just plumb wore out. It was time to go. Glad it was peaceful with lots of help from Hospice. Now comes the interesting part, like moving all her stuff out of her assisted living apartment when the place is locked down. Fortunately, I do have a big storage locker a couple of miles away.

My Mom made it to 92, and the first 90 years were jolly well okay.
After that came the broken hip and a lot of painful medical stuff that gradually wore her down and fried her brain. The slide was fast, and yet she held on for another year and a half.
Then one day her doctor informed her she needed another round of scary tests and procedures and she just flatly said "NO"...enough, basta.

DOCTOR: "Well, Mrs. Haas, if you don't do this, you're probably going to die."

Mrs. Haas: "Well, that's not a very nice thing to say but at least I will go with my head held high."

And that's pretty much what she did about six months later.
She had a wonderful life but she is missed terribly, as I am sure yours is, too.
Blessings on your whole family.

My shelter in place:

Day 1 – I Can Do This!! Got enough food and wine to last a month!
Day 2 – Opening my 8th bottle of Wine. I fear wine supplies might not last!
Day 3 – Strawberries: Some have 210 seeds, some have 235 seeds. Who Knew??
Day 4 – 8:00pm. Removed my Day Pajamas and put on my Night Pajamas.
Day 5 – Today, I tried to make Hand Sanitizer. It came out as Jello Shots!!
Day 6 – I get to take the Garbage out. I’m so excited, I can’t decide what to wear.
Day 7 – Laughing way too much at my own jokes!!
Day 8 – Went to a new restaurant called “The Kitchen”. You have to gather all the ingredients and make your own meal. I have No clue how this place is still in business.
Day 9 – I put liquor bottles in every room. Tonight, I’m getting all dressed up and going Bar hopping.
Day 10 – Struck up a conversation with a Spider today. Seems nice. He’s a Web Designer.
Day 11 – Isolation is hard. I swear my fridge just said, “What the hell do you want now?”
Day 12 – I realized why dogs get so excited about something moving outside, going for walks or car rides. I think I just barked at a squirrel.
Day 13 – If you keep a glass of wine in each hand, you can’t accidentally touch your face.
Day 14 – Anybody else feel like they’ve cooked dinner about 50 times this month?

Doesn't matter. Tell him he is more than welcome here.
All he has to do is email me at dfspamboxfb (at) gmail (dot) com and say he's Luce, Hamish's bro from DP and I will add him immediately.
And tell him to hurry up and send that email. laugh

Yeah but Illinois will always be "The Land of Lincoln" at least until the SovCits force us all to use their fake license plates.

University of Chicago study on empathy in rats

There is a growing body of research showing that animals respond to the emotions of others. But it wasn't certain whether rats could suppress their own greed in order to aid another rat.

Following a two-week introduction period, pairs of rats were put inside an arena. One was trapped inside a central restrainer, while the other roamed free in the larger space. By day six or seven, on average, the roaming rat learned to free the trapped rat.

When chocolate was introduced to the mix, there was no difference in the time taken to free the trapped cage-mate, despite pitting freeing the trapped cage-mate against getting a tasty treat. Furthermore, the helper rats did not eat all the chocolate chips. Instead, they often left a few chocolate chips for the trapped rats to eat upon release.

Clearly, Trumpers are not even as good as rats.

Either empathy or the free rat wants to have sex with the trapped rat, while it's eating it's chocolate.

Seriously though, as anybody who has had a pet rat knows, rats are very friendly and social even with humans!

A single rat is inconsequential, it's kinda cute and doesn't eat much.

A pack of rats gets the exterminator called and all the rats die.

Just speaking from personal experience.

Has anybody else noticed that the air is cleaner where you live? New Mexico is famous for stunningly clear air, which is what attracted O'Keefe and Stieglitz to permanently move from the East Coast to northern NM and the Ghost Ranch. There has been many a time that I thought of that and wondered if I was having the same experience they did, as the views were rarely what I would consider "stunning".

On Saturday I was out for a little hike in the Burro Mountains and was truly stunned by the clarity and vivid colors of the landscape - like nothing I had ever seen before. And this morning's sunrise struck me the same way.

Incredible...

I live in the swamp, the air is always thick and steamy here. There are notes of rotting vegetation and if a breeze should stir there is sometimes the scent of a skunk ape or the foetid stench of a swamp dragons lair. There is no high point where I could achieve a clear view of my surroundings but it is unlikely the miasma that lays over my world has cleared to any degree.

We just had days and days of rain. I got a washtub on my porch and the damned thing is full of rain water just in the last week. Who says it never rains in Southern California. Anyway, after a good rain, I can see Santa Catalina from end to end, and even San Clemente Island (55 miles away). I can also see the snow on Mounts San Jacinto and San Gorgonio (about 60 miles away).

So my cousin got my grandfather's WWII records declassified from the Canadian government, given that the secrets act has expired.

My grandfather had told us that he trained soldiers from 1942 to 1944, then "helped clean up the mess." It turns out that meant he worked on cracking death camps and rounding up guards and SS men for trial. He was almost unique, it turns out, in that none of his charges had "accidents", and they all lived to meet the hangman. Which fits, my grandfather was a very cold-blooded man.

We also found out I have one more aunt than I thought, since my grandfather did a little [censored] around in England in 44. We just received an email reply from this new aunt, and it turns out that I have a bag of cousins and an even bigger bag of their kids and grandkids we never knew we had. So, you know, my family just got bigger, and that's more than okay.

The Republican attempt to suppress the vote in Wisconsin failed to recognize that motivated urban Democrats denied mail ballots will go stand in line for hours to vote, while a lot of rural Republicans who wanted to vote by mail won't go stand in line. Republicans shot themselves in both feet since now they are all about blatant voter suppression and the state supreme court judge they wanted to win has been defeated anyway.

If you're getting a $1,200 Trump socialism check instead of direct deposit, those checks will begin to be mailed in three weeks. Why the delay? Fatass Trump wants his name on the check.

Quote:
“You are getting your money late because the President thinks it is more important that his name be on the check than that you are able to pay your bills on time,” Schatz tweeted. “This is not a rhetorical flourish. The checks are delayed. Because Trump.”

Let this sink in...Americans desperate for their check have to wait so that Trump can make his socialism checks vanity checks to himself.

You can't make that stuff up.

Anyway, I filled-up the van yesterday and got a wash. Gas was $2.29. I was all...what? shocked

According to Trump's subcontractors who have worked on Fatass' properties, checks with Donald Trump's name on them usually bounce.

Yea, however the real reason is it is free advertising and personal aggrandizement. Also, it is his nature to put his name on everything and not spend a dime of his own money to do so. All the while claiming all the credit.

p.s. Monsieur President Donald (...) Trump*, it may not look like a mushroom, I hear it is a toadstool.

Can you get the Trump Pence Swastika banner from the campaign website?

Seems like they could come up with an original flag design, something they could call their own.

Maybe an artistic blend of the Confederate flag and a Swastika.

Good morning to another day of coronaliving! Yesterday we had a nice visit with a friend delivering custom masks for my wife and I. We practiced social distancing and still managed to share wine and cheese on the porch. We each had our own plates and glasses, and we didn't touch the bottle. I prepared the food in a sterile environment, after washing and gowning. So, we shared the sunshine and the latest events from a safe distance. The wine, by the way, was excellent.

I hope you treated the masks with the same care. I think 24 hours of non-contact should be enough for natural fabrics. Synthetic might be a bit longer. All this means is you put the masks in a safe container, and then go wash your hands. 24 hours later, it's safe to put them on and use them.

Huffpost has a story about the effectiveness of different mask materials. And don't forget, wearing masks doesn't protect you from infected people coughing or sneezing. It protects others from you!

If you need protection, the best is to stay home and avoid delivered items and mail until it has sat around for a day or two. If you do have to go out, keep social distance from people in masks and stay far away from people without them. Wear eye protection. Eyeballs are very susceptible. Never touch your mask until you get home, and then treat the outside of it as if it is contaminated. Remove it, put it in it's container, wash your hands, and then shower and wash your hair. Disinfect anything you touched while out.

I watched a very interesting special on fungi. Fungi are responsible for life on earth in a very real sense. They formed the bridge between the oceans and land, broke down the lava-dense landbase, gave plants their start and are still symbiotic in many, many ways.

If you go to the comment section of Gregor's video, most of the comments are from Europe, even though the video is from Mendocino, California.

It just goes to show that entire WORLD is watching this November 2020. Many words of encouragement from around the world that Americans "vote him away."

Apparently, there is a huge Facebook presence of alt-right idiots plotting an armed revolution. Their latest code-word for it is "boogalu" or some variation of that. They are discussing weapons, bombs, assassins, recruiting people over to their side, etc. Hopefully, the FBI has them all identified and is ready to pick them up.

In local news, the County Sheriffs arrested a bunch of "open everything up" protesters today in Encinitas, California for violating shelter-in-place, social distance, and mask rules. Hopefully they all spend some time in a cellblock with some sick people.

But nothing will ever happen here, so I am told.
I'll never forget Jesse Ventura telling Larry King that with twenty trained men (like himself) all acting in a coordinated fashion, he could bring most of the major cities to their knees in a day or less.

Okay, I dunno about "give or take ten here, ten there", but I think I believe he's right, random trained snipers acting in concert would probably trigger something similar to rolling lockdowns.

This virus behaves like five thousand of Ventura's trained men acting in concert.
