A 2015 scientific paper published in "Nature" Magazine is being heavily referenced by conspiracy theorists, peddling the false notion that SARS Cov2 was man-made, then deliberately or accidentally released to cause the current pandemic. This is a grave injustice to talented scientists, whose cutting-edge work from half a decade ago should have prompted (but didn't) an international effort to fund and support development of effective therapies and safe vaccines against Covid infections.
Pseudoscience nuts are referencing the paper because they do not actually comprehend it. With scientific papers it is important to read and understand the aims, results and discussion they contain before drawing conclusions. Alarmists point out in-lab generation or "engineering" of a coronavirus documented in the research as evidence for their outlandish claims. The method documented in the paper is "gain of function" research which provides the best assessment of the pandemic potential of any emerging pathogen. How else can scientists fully understand how a virus like this works?
The paper by Menachery et al is one of the best I've seen when it comes to explaining and demonstrating the interactions of coronaviruses with animals and humans. Yes, it documents the in-lab generation of a novel, species-jumping coronavirus. Virus sourced from bats was shown to recombine into a new virus in mice. The ability of the resulting virus to replicate in human respiratory tract cells was demonstrated. Antibody plasma therapy and vaccines were included in the study, showing that they were both ineffective and too risky to use.
The research behind this paper and others like it provided conclusive proof that the emergence of a new SARS Cov pandemic was a significant risk. It should have been the wake-up call for world leaders to pool resources into developing effective therapies for Covid infections, along with preventative vaccines safe enough to use in humans. Instead, it was ignored by politicians as epidemiologists around the world tried and failed to gain attention to the grave risk posed to humanity by coronaviruses. Now, this excellent research is being cited by conspiracy theorists as evidence that SARS-Cov2 is a biological weapon. Humanity at its finest.Reference:
