Elsewhere recently there was a brief discussion, part of which concerned how Obama would be remembered in history. I don't know what criteria historians will use, but one consideration will certainly be legislative and policy accomplishments, which we all know were aggressively stymied for Obama by Republicans. Given that situation, it might be more fair to grade his performance on a curve, though that would be difficult, and unlikely to make any difference.

What I think is much more interesting about him is that he was America's first experiment electing a black president, which is probably a major factor in the extreme right-wing resistance to his leadership. In that light, getting elected (and his two terms in office), is a very remarkable accomplishment. That we are seeing a resurgence of racism is a result of his race (resurgence is probably not the correct word, as it is more likely a baring of subdued racism that our apparent cultural advancement since the Sixties had suppressed). Part of Trump's success at having such a strong base I believe is rooted in having pulled the covers off of that smoldering racism (and other assorted bigotries), freeing the inner assholiness of a surprisingly large number of bigots in this land of all men who were created equal.

So Obama's legacy may be remembered significantly as a leader who acquitted himself with style, composure, and intelligence under incredibly difficult circumstances, and who brought us into the light of the next phase of dealing with the problem of racism simply by being a good 'President while Black'.

One last observation - isn't it curious that Obama is boxed and labelled as a black person (even by himself), even though he is 50/50 mixed race? Brings to mind the good ol' days when even 1/64 was good enough to be black.

It's because of the one-drop rule that many embrace - including black Americans. Hmm

He did sign the ACA into law, and then Republicans hung the "ObamaCare" appellation on it. We tried to get a national health care plan into law since WW II, he gets the credit for it! That's what is going in the history books, much to the dismay of the people who coined the name. I think the other thing that will go in there is the racist opposition that subverted the system for both his terms, culminating with refusal to hold confirmation hearings for his Supreme Court nomination. Republicans are NOT going to come out well. I think they will go in the chapters about the KKK, White Supremacists, Neo-Nazis, and the Russian Asset who succeeded him.

So, the White House is looking to be the shining knight WaPo!

After months of obstructing any deal on the HEROS Act - and continuing to do so - the WH now is looking to provide faux relief through executive action.

It’s the only game plan this administration is capable of even getting close to competently executing:

1) Cause a crisis
2) Valiantly step forward with a unilateral abuse of power disguised as a sop to ease (not solve, mind you) the situation

Edit Reason: For clarity.

Trump is the arsonist who sets fires in various spots in a building, then proceeds to shout alarms and extinguish the blazes he has set himself, basking in the adoration of his gullible rubes, while bribing the fire department to keep quiet.

Hmm

You're being too kind Rick, Trump is a walking dumpster fire, spewing toxic fumes and liable to explode at any time.

The US should always get a cut. For convenience we call them taxes. But the US gave away most of their cut when Trump cut the taxes of the rich and powerful. What Trump is really saying is that he personally should get a cut because he okayed the deal.

Do companies pay tax when they purchase another company? Hmm I don't think I have ever heard of that before. I might just be ignorant on that topic. gobsmacked

I just got a new computer after seven years. I'm returning the old one for a credit, and am nearly done WIPING OUT ALL MY DATA!!!!!!

It's a little stressful... I can't tell you how much valuable detritus I've accumulated in the old magic box in that time, and even though I'm fairly convinced it all got restocked in the new storehouse, how can I be sure??? HOW CAN I BE SURE!!!!!!

Oh, well, it's too late now.

Definitely time for a stiff gin and tonic...
