The state of Rhode Island is moving to change its official name — "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" — due to its connection to slavery. Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo signed an executive order on Monday to change what appears on government documents, and the state's legislature is moving forward with a bill to alter the name entirely.

...

Voters will need to choose to amend the Rhode Island Constitution in November before the state's official name can be permanently changed.

This isn't the first time the state has attempted to change its name: When the state tried in 2010, 78% of voters opposed the removal of "Providence Plantations." But Metts said he has renewed hope.

- CBS News

i didn't know that Rhode Island's official name is "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations." That removal of "Providence Plantations" is even a question is asinine.

The difference between the last name change attempt in 2010 and today is that attitudes have changed and more old conservatives have died off like the dinosaurs which they are.

I seen that and thought it stupid. The name Providence Plantations was the name Rhode Island's founder Roger Williams first settlement. It had nothing to do with slavery. More to do with religious freedoms.

You have this:Following the 1660 restoration of royal rule in England, it was necessary to gain a Royal Charter from King Charles II. Charles was a Catholic sympathizer in staunchly Protestant England, and he approved of the colony's promise of religious freedom. He granted the request with the Royal Charter of 1663, uniting the four settlements together into the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. In the following years, many persecuted groups settled in the colony, notably Quakers and Jews.[6][7] The Rhode Island colony was very progressive for the time, passing laws abolishing witchcraft trials, imprisonment for debt, most capital punishment, and slavery of both blacks and whites,[8][9] enacting the first law prohibiting slavery in America on May 18, 1652, more than 210 years before the Emancipation Proclamation.[10]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colony_of_Rhode_Island_and_Providence_Plantations

The change is kind of a slap in the face of Rhode Island's founder. But what the heck. If it makes those who want to eliminate the Providence Plantations name feel better for a few minutes, why not. It certainly won't make any of them in favor one bit better off or those who oppose one bit worse off. It accomplishes nothing in bettering the relations between the races in the U.S.

This whole whoopie do seems stupid to me since the name itself had nothing to do with slavery. Just the name of the first settlement in Rhode Island. Besides, no one knows Providence Plantations is part of Rhode Island's official name. No one is going to miss it.

That’s all true.

Requiring everyone to know the history of the settlement of a place in order to correctly apply anything but the standard American 2020 understanding of “Providence Plantations” is probably a road to far.

Just shorten it to Rhode Island; you know, the only name 99% of Americans know.

It's just like a Righty to rewrite history and deny slavery existed in Rhode Island. Who knew? smile

Quote:
Rhode Island played a leading role in the transatlantic slave trade. Not only did Rhode Islanders have slaves—they had more per capita than any other New England state—but they also entered with gusto into the trade. By the close of the eighteenth century, Rhode Islanders had mounted at least a thousand voyages from Africa to the Americas.

Per citation 9 in the above link:

Quote:
Rhode Island and the Slave Trade

Rhode Island established the first law regulating slavery on May 18, 1652 as part of the Acts and Orders of the General Court of Warwick. It stated the blacks or whites forced to serve another must be freed after 10 years upon arrival in Rhode Island. The fine for noncompliance was 40 pounds.

The first act for the Non-Importation of Slaves was passed by the Rhode Island General Assembly on June 13, 1774. It stated that “no Negro or mulatto slave shall be brought in to this colony, and in case any slave shall be brought in, he or she shall be…immediately free, so far as respects personal freedom, and the enjoyment of private property.”

The Providence Journal has produced a website, The Unrighteous Traffick, dedicated to outlining the history of the slave trade in Rhode Island:

Rhode Island is just unnecessarily archaic and confusing: It has nothing to do with the Greek island and isn't an island itself.

I think they should just change it Roberta. smile
