When I worked at FF, birds were eviscerated at 48 days old, "boiler chickens" at 72 days old. smile

Selective breeding for thousands of years. No GMO required. It's incredible how fast we have got chickens to grow. It's almost like a tumor! This is actually one reason why lab-grown meat will find it very difficult to compete.

And I thinks the industry term is "harvested". "Eviscerated" invokes too many Steven King nightmares.

In a perfect world ALL of the eggs are eaten and none are hatched. Most laying hens never get "broody" and want to hatch a clutch of eggs. When one does, you remove her from the eggs and dip her hind end into dishpan full of ice water.

Leave the egg hatching to the experts. Baby chicks are $3 and are already sexed so you don't need to worry about cockerels. Point of lay pullets at 5 months are about $25.

In her lifetime a hen should give you about 500-600 eggs. You don't need any roosters at all, they're a nuisance but they're pretty and the hens like having one around.

Oh, I thought you would let a few eggs hatch to replace your over-the-hill layers. I read the chick-sexing is not so reliable, but the seller will generally take any roosters back and replace them with new sexed chicks.

I would just buy pullets myself. Don't want to sit around waiting for months for eggs.

I think I want to build a solar hot water heater before I build a chicken coop. Nobody in Sunny Southern California should be using fuel or electricity to heat water. Apparently you have to position them to point to the winter sun's angle so they don't melt your plastic plumbing during the summer. They work that good. And I can believe it: When I leave a stainless steel dog dish out in the sun for 10 minutes, it can be too hot to pick up. When I look out at the farm across the way, I can see they have no crops in August. Just bare dirt.
