My wife and I have been to Vietnam a couple of times. For them the war is simply over. Dealing with stuff like mines are just dealt with and, strangely enough the war is rarely mentioned. What really stood out is that the Vietnamese seem to be more Chinese then the Chinese! for sure they have, for instance, more temples to Chinese gods than the Chinese. If you goto China they have rebuilt some of their temples but I have always thought they were more for the tourists than anything else and the monk are more interested in selling stuff than any religious activity. In vietnam, however, there is a Chinese temple in just about every village.

China's deemphasis on religion is mostly because of the communist antipathy toward it. Anything traditional survives, but religion is NOT Party dogma. That's why the Muslim Uighurs are treated so badly: Five times a day they pray to somebody other than the Communist Party, so they are traitors!

In neighboring countries, Chinese influence predates communism by centuries. Hence the temples. I bet there are a lot fewer in North Korea! None?

I'm kinda going to go with China on the religion thing.

Christians here have assigned divine powers to their leader...all who do not bow to Him are of the Devil.

I'd like to see far fewer temples...

I'm profoundly sad and immensely scared to learn that Ruth Bader Ginsberg has died. Ginsberg was truly a monumental figure in the law. And to think that the fraud of a president and majority leader will orchestrate an historic abomination on our nation.

In some ways, her passing makes it better for Democrats in the Senate races. Democrats can point to whatever monster Republicans confirm, not to mention McTurtle's hypocrisy for "not letting the next President decide" like he did with Obama. Yes, it's sad that we have to wait for two more conservatives to die before we get a liberal court, but that time will pass like the blink of an eye. Might not even take that long, if people get sloppy about Covid-19 before we have vaccines.

Yes, the Vietnamese are more Chinese than any other country in Southeast Asia. Prior to the North's take over their government was based on the Chinese Mandarin system. That is until we, the good old USA forced the government of SVN to change. Also they were ruled by China for a thousand years. Their language is more Chinese and doesn't fit the other languages of southeast Asia. I can speak Thai and Lao and have some understanding of Khmer. The languages are so different, I was never able to pick up Vietnamese while stationed there.

Also the religion is different although all four countries are Buddhist. Vietnam is Mahayana Buddhist while Thailand, Laos and Cambodia are Theravada Buddhist. The difference is probably more profound that the difference between a Catholic and a southern Baptist. the only common denominator is Buddha, the man himself.

I haven't been to Cambodia, but in Laos the war is over there also. It took longer for Laos to come out of its shell than Vietnam. Laos is very close to the Chinese these days. Vietnam closer to us. Laos still tries to be a communist country, Vietnam has moved toward Capitalism.

Lots of differences, but very friendly people all around southeast Asia. Laos is the country that has all the problems with UXO. Especially up and around the PDJ and along the old Ho Chi Minh Trail.

May Mitch McConnell experience the most ferocious fate of Karma retribution ever bestowed and may it happen before the vote.

My youngest daughter, one of her degrees is in East Asian studies - focused on China: reading and writing Mandarin, culture, theater, art, politics and government. This is the bachelors she did in three years along with her four year bachelors in International Leadership

I did no studies, I basically learned my Thai and Lao from the Thai and Lao Armies. I basically lived with them and as some would say, had gone native.
