When a dementia patient forgets something, their brain fills in memory gaps with a falsification that a person believes to be true. It is called Confabulation.

If they were confabulating, they would not be able to repeat the lies that they told last time, as it's a very ad lib performance with patients. Also, patients have no resistance to altering their stories when confronted. What confabulating patients do share with GOPers, is an apparent shamelessness, but in patients they are shameless because they are not aware of lying, because their defense mechanisms will not allow them to be aware of their dementia. So perhaps the GOP are confabulating, except that their subconscious cannot allow their conscious minds to acknowledge the truth!

Yes, well, I don’t think forgetting facts is a major part of the problem. It looks more like most of them want new alternative facts to use in confirming their biases.

I just did a drive-by of the wacky blog “Conscious Debate” (a site that doesn’t allow any debate by virtue of banning people with views contrary to those of the clan) and was caught by a post reviling AOC for having a credit score of 430, but being on the Finance Committee.

As it happens, that “fact” was a temious production of a security guard in Florida posted to Twitter a number of years ago, and is completely false. That true fact is not a popular choice among the tribe, a circumstance that allows continued free and gleeful circulation of the false fact.

Is this an example of dementia or confabulation? I’m thinking it is not. I speculate it is an example of a personality disorder that includes narcissism, and that the main reason these people admire Trump is because they are very much like him, with the exception that they are not powerful and famous. It is hero worship - with Trump as a role model, and with social media as a safe and easy platform for narcissistic expression, these common Trumpers can now stand on top of the rock that they normally live under, and angrily shout at a largely imaginary hostile world. Makes ‘em feel “big”.

Clearly both conditions can coexist, and unfortunately both are also chronic irreversible conditions. I cannot remember the source documenting this statement, but was confirmed by my dog, his anagram God, and my gold fillings!

I suspect that some GOP folks are confabulating and some are not. The problem is that nobody will actually ever know as they are all doing it (lying).

The fact that their claims change drastically as soon as the last one was debunked, is evidence for confabulation. That's a defining symptom.
