GOOD SATURDAY MORNING, EVERYBODY!!
I have to start by wishing one of my favorites.... Happy Birthday, Archie!
BORN ON AUGUST 2, 1924 - Carroll O’Connor (Emmy Award-winning actor: All in the Family [1971-1972, 1976-1977, 1977-1978, 1978-1979], In the Heat of the Night [1988-1989]; Cleopatra, The Devil’s Brigade, In Harm’s Way, Kelly’s Heroes, Marlowe; died June 21, 2001)

1824 - In New York City, Fifth Avenue was opened.

1861 - The United States Congress passed the first income tax. The revenues were intended for the war effort against the South. The tax was never enacted.
1876 - "Wild Bill" Hickok was killed (shot from behind) while playing poker in Deadwood, SD. Jack McCall was later hanged for the shooting.

1934 - German President Paul von Hindenburg died. His successor was Adolf Hitler.
1939 - Albert Einstein signed a letter to President Roosevelt urging the U.S. to have an atomic weapons research program.
1964 - The Pentagon reported the first of two North Vietnamese attacks on U.S. destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin.
1983 - U.S. House of Representatives approved a law that designated the third Monday of January would be a federal holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The law was signed by President Reagon on November 2.
1985 - 137 people were killed when a jumbo jet crashed at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. The Delta jet was attempting to land at the time of the crash. 29 people survived.

1990 - Iraq invaded the oil-rich country of Kuwait. Iraq claimed that Kuwait had driven down oil prices by exceeding production quotas set by OPEC.
BIRTHDAYS AUGUST 2...
1871 - John Sloan (artist: South Beach Bathers; cofounder of Ashcan Art; died Sep 7, 1951)

1905 - Myrna Loy (Williams) (actress: Thin Man movies, Airport, Topaz, Midnight Lace; died Dec 14, 1993)

1924 - James Baldwin... was an American novelist, writer, playwright, poet, essayist, and civil rights activist. Most of Baldwin's work deals with racial and sexual issues in the mid-20th century United States. His novels are notable for the personal way in which they explore questions of identity as well as for the way in which they mine complex social and psychological pressures related to being black and homosexual well before the social, cultural or political equality of these groups was improved.(author: Go Tell It on the Mountain; died Dec 1, 1987)

I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually. James A. Baldwin
Everybody's journey is individual. If you fall in love with a boy, you fall in love with a boy. The fact that many Americans consider it a disease says more about them than it does about homosexuality. James A. Baldwin
1932 - Peter O’Toole (actor: Lawrence of Arabia, Becket, A Lion in Winter, The Last Emperor; autobiography: Loitering with Intent)

1937 - Garth Hudson (musician: keyboard: group: The Band: Up on Cripple Creek, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down)

Pastor Ag just got released from hospital. A drunk driver doing 60, ran a red light, plowed into my car, spinning it around so far, the cops could not tell how it happened. Luckily the witnesses were good enough to stay. Even more luckily, Spousette was released from intensive care, since all hospital beds were full, eventually released (7 hours later) with instructions to seek more care tomorrow.
Driving to see doc, however, may be a problem now that the front of the vehicle reaches the back.
Thanks to seatbelts and airbags, only one broken bone, but spousette's face looks like she enjoys playing the roll of punching bag.

omg Ag, I don't even know what to say. I hope you guys (especially your wife) can figure out how to get more care this morning. Damn, I did that myself (a few years back) and know what it feels like. No broken nose but the jaw took a bad hit, so did the rest of the face. I feel her pain. Take care, Ag ang Ms Ag. I am so sorry to hear this. ps I am grateful you're both alive
Edited by olyve (08/02/08 06:22 AM) Edit Reason: to add ps

Ag, I'm glad you and yours made it through the accident without even worse injury, and I sincerely hope the other driver is in jail and licenseless. I wish you both a fast recovery.
Olyve - lovely opener today; Peter O'Toole is a major favorite of mine (time to watch "A Lion in Winter" again...or maybe "Lawrence of Arabia." Though considering Ag's news, maybe I'll abstain from drunkards for the day in his honor.)
Regarding "Wild Bill" Hickock -- he started his less-than-illustrious gunslinging career about two miles from my childhood home. My father used to say that a boy who ran from the gunfight probably ran right through what became our yard. Hickock still has a bad name in those parts.
Ag, keep us posted on your progress when you can?

Olyve - I meant to send you this last week when I first heard it. Composer introduces a 'Dead' Symphony I particularly like the "St. Stephen" section. Sounds Russian to me.

Where did this ridiculous "fact" come from? 1990 - Iraq invaded the oil-rich country of Kuwait. Iraq claimed that Kuwait had driven down oil prices by exceeding production quotas set by OPEC. Already, while the infamous quote "we have no opinion about your border dispute with Kuwait" is still echoing in our present memories, history is being revised before our very eyes! And, I suppose we will "learn" soon enough, the US retaliated against Iraq because they dumped Kuwaiti babies out of hospital incubators! Sheesh. Dear pastor ag: I can see yours and your beloved partner's faces in my mind, and I am holding you both in the Light and sending you healing beams. Get well soon! Love that "summertime" photo, olyve. Here's one I took in Boston last year with a similar theme:

What a terrible event, Ag, speedy recovery to you both.
And jail to the drunk driver.

Boston? About a year ago? Hey, I do I smell an anniversary in the air? Yes yes. We got our marriage license on July 30, 2007. However we celebrate our wedding date as May 24, 2008 which is the date we were married under the care of our Quaker Meeting. The annual thing actually coincides with Bele Chere, Asheville's summertime street festival. We leave town to avoid it each year. In '06 we went to Western PA via West Virginia. In '05 we went to the Virginia Highlands.
