And American society -- its structures, institutions, beliefs, character -- was based and built upon Graeco-Roman and Judeo-Christian culture and thought, as well as English law and natural rights philosophy, and the Early American's own unique experience.

Whether one was Christian, Deist, or atheist is irrelevent to the impact on them of the general culture in which they were raised in or lived.

Nancy is referring to free markets, Slipped, not free trade. She would be more accurate if she had written market-based economies or sorta kinda somewhat free markets, as nations do not currently operate in a free market environment.

In regard to your question of socialism failing compared to what, I would suggest that she was comparing socialist economies to market economies. All socialist economies have been failures because they did not have market-based economies.

As to her statement:
 Quote:
We know that our nation is a nation of laws, not man.

I suspect that she was referring to our being meant to be a nation that follows the rule-of-law vs the rule-of-kings (or mobs, or men), the "rule-of-law" meaning that all persons, high and low are subject to the same law. If this is not what she meant, I am sure she will correct me.
Yours in circumspection,
Issodhos

You must not have been a Seinfeld fan. I admit I loved it. I rarely watch anything other than Discovery, History or A and E now. Most of my news comes from NPR and what I read on the net.
Elaine Bennis (not sure about that spelling) was Jerry Seinfeld's ex-girlfriend and runs into this guy on the street that cannot remember meeting her at a party, but remembers virtually everything else about the party. It hurts her pride. It's a funny bit. This guy is…well...a tad “laid back” himself.

I'm familiar with the Seinfeld program and Elaine. I was just playing along with your post by acting as the guy at the party.:-)

Please provide a source to support your assertion that the US is "the most charitable nation in the world".
