People who remember every second of their life - Total recall | 60 Minutes Australia

Quote:
Imagine being able to remember every minute detail of your life. You can recall what the weather was like, what you were reading or what you wore to the shops at any minute, any hour or any day stretching back decades. It sounds like some kind of parlour trick, but it's actually a real and very rare medical phenomenon.

Hyperthymesia

Actress Marilu Henner has this condition.

To be brutally honest I think it would be a nightmare.
I actually HAVE what qualifies as a "VCR" capability in my mind, but it's really only useful for video editing and music.

Now that I am in my 60's it's beginning to fade but for the first 55 years or so of my life, I could not only remember everything someone said, I could mimic the WAY that they SAID it, what music was playing in the background, their body language, the lighting conditions, etc.

It's the main reason I eventually BECAME a film editor.
But 100 percent of every second? No, I believe that there are probably a few million people like myself but maybe only a small handful of people like Marilu Henner, and that the difference between people like me and people like her is probably enormous, and that people like her probably have a fair amount of difficulty in other areas due to their "gift" being such an overwhelming drain on everything else.

It would be very useful if you were an actor: A single read to memorize an entire play.

I can remember every stupid or embarrassing thing I ever did in my life...it's almost total recall...

A good many actors fall into the same category as I do.
They're definitely a good deal LESS gifted than Marilu Henner.
Again, if she is rated "100", the difference between 100 and "85 or 90" is not just ten or fifteen points, it's like the difference between a crisp winter cold snap in Minnesota on Superbowl Sunday at -10 degrees and "absolute zero".
But watching them work is astounding because at 85 or 90, you can do some pretty neat tricks.

A lot of the actors I've worked with, and a good many script supervisors, can carry the entire script in their heads after one good read, especially if it's a "table read" once-over rehearsal.

With me, I'm still seeing the live action as if it's playing on a screen in my head. Not just vague fuzzies, the actual show or movie...complete.

When I discovered that most rock and roll sheet music for piano/organ was "simplified" arrangements, I got annoyed with sight reading and gradually began to play by ear and discovered that I could tell if something was off by one stupid little note, or one fraction of a beat.

I am not special, again I know there are millions like me.
But I feel very lucky. Now as I get into senior citizen territory I am seeing it fade a little bit, and I struggle for names when I never used to.
But that "VCR" still works, which is very strange.

I cannot begin to imagine what having this at "100 level" would be like.
I think I'd lose my mind.
