I remember a scene in the Ken Burns documentary 'The Duct Bowl' (a good one for watching if you haven't already seen it).
Quoting an Iowa farmer in the film saying it took three years: 'First you wore your savings out, then you wore your credit out. Finally you wore yourself out'
