I have seen this done successfully elsewhere.

It is a collective thread for obituaries when the poster chooses to not post a specific thread on the passing of a particularly person. A new thread is started at the beginning of each year.

It is strictly up to the individual posters' preference as to whether or not they wish to post passings to the collective thread, or to give the passed person a thread of his own.

As I wrote yesterday about resident Grand Wizard of obituaries:

Truly, I've been waiting for you to put up David Frosts obit. You're right on schedule. coffee Why are you so fascinated with people's passing? Hmm

  • I miss a lot of people, both well known people, and people I have known personally.
  • Obits are a way of remembering people.
  • My own passing could happen at any time.

Anyone's passing "could happen at any time." Hmm

Reader Rant has celebrated the passing of people in the past, but looking at your list from the past year, you place really obscure people on it: Hornet nest guy, whooping cough baby, C-list actors. Whatever. I guess death is your thing as morbid as it is.

I would rather read Golem's list than listen to the Teapublican crap that is floating around.

Boxer Tommy Morrison of "Rocky V" fame dies at 44

Quote:
Tommy Morrison, the former heavyweight champion who stood toe-to-toe with Lennox Lewis and George Foreman and later tested positive for HIV, died Monday. He was 44...

He was a prodigious puncher whose bid to fight in the 1988 Seoul Olympics ended at the hands of Ray Mercer, who later dealt Morrison his first professional loss. He had a starring role in "Rocky V" alongside Sylvester Stallone. And perhaps most memorably, Morrison tested positive for HIV when the virus still carried a significant stigma, only to declare later the test was false...

RIP Frederik Pohl, the man who transformed science fiction

Quote:
One of the leading lights of the science fiction world, editor and author Frederik Pohl, passed away this weekend after a career that defined the genre for decades...

Pohl was known for his mind-bending, often satirical novels (many co-authored with longtime collaborator C.M. Kornbluth), his editing acumen, his science fiction criticism, and his witty, fascinating blog, which he was updating right up until his death...

My relationship with obituaries has changed down through the years.

In my youth, these people seemed to be obscure historical personages whose relevance to anything was questionable and tedious.

In middle age, I started to notice that the obituaries included a few people who I was familiar with. But this was still a subject that had little interest for me. The people had mostly made their contribution in a hazy past. And, who really wanted to dwell on their passing.

As perhaps also with Golem, the people who are dying now are icons who shaped the world I have known. I see that world slowly crumbling around me as the pillars fall one by one.

The future begins to take on a disturbing clarity as I observe the aging experience of my mid 90's mom. She lives where she has lived for 60 years, and attends the same church. The inexorable tsunami of time has swept away her friends... and left her familiar surroundings as hollowed out shells of the world she knew.
