Your optimism is heartening. My problem is that stuff is happening, right now! Much of the pressure on our southern border, for instance, is that crops are failing all over latin America. That isn't going away real soon. I have noted that Biden has requested money to be sent to latin American countries to try and slow down the migration. I am, however, not sure that money can take care of a lack of rain and failing crops.

My optimism is not for the near term. In the next century we may see deaths in the billions. Sort of an enforced restriction of carbon emissions by a single species. It's not going to be pretty.

There are paths we can take in the short term which might make this easier but conservative policy will simply not allow them. Even half a million deaths in the US from covid has not convinced people that the threat is real. Even with rising seas and devastating weather events they are not convinced climate change is real. Even with landfills and the seas choked with plastic pollution no one is serious about fixing the problem. Because it would cost more to use degradeable or recyclable products.

Well, I’m not dead (nor a cat) so obviously the whole COVID thing and Climate Change are just the latest round of scams cooked up by pointy-headed scientists to kill God and line their own pockets

Some biologist are making real progress in coming up with bacteria or fungus that can digest plastics. One concern would be that IBCs on ships could become infected and leak!

I read a long time ago about bacteria and fungi living in jet fuel tanks and eating the hydrocarbons. I wondered what would happen if it got into the oil wells and ate the worlds oil supply. Not to worry as they need some oxygen and water to metabolize oils.

I'm not sure I want them in my compost piles to digest Styrofoam peanuts and then getting loose and hungry and eating whatever plastics they find!

If you build it, they will come!!

It would be essential to build-in some kind of obscure nutrient requirement, so escaped plastic-eater would not destroy the world. I'm not too sure it would not evolve around that though.

Sidebar: many rightwingnuts, who generally have a visceral hatred for windmills and Green New Deals, are totally evangelistic when it comes to despising plastic in the environment (particularly in the ocean).

You must have a better class of Rightwingers in New Mexico. It’s been a long time since I’ve met a “conservative” who had anything but contempt for anything that had to do with recycling or pollution prevention. The only time they get worked up about unhealthy environments is to rail about “filthy liberal cities” where no pure and true American would ever want to live.

You may be right. If the Texas disaster has proven anything it has proven that the voting public is not particularly bright. They were warned of disaster 10 years ago, Democrats have tried to address the problem, in the Texas legislature to no avail. Everybody, it seems, has been happy as clams for 10 years with what they had and, now, they are upset. TEN YEARS! For ten freaking years!

Momentarily I thought that the Texas problems might engender a switch to Democrats. On reflection, however............
