I just read, from a story in NY Times, from India:
"A new variant known here as “the double mutant” may be doing a lot of the damage. The science is still early but from what we know, this variant contains one mutation that may make the virus more contagious and another that may make it partially resistant to vaccines. Doctors are pretty scared. Some we have spoken to said they had been vaccinated twice and still got seriously ill, a very bad sign."

Seems to me that masking up and being very careful might be a good idea if you are vaccinated or not! If they have it we will get it. Hopefully we are already working on a solution?

India is a basket case. I just heard about a paper from 2018 reporting very widespread Vitamin D deficiency in India. Like over 90% are deficient! Which seems counterintuitive, but most Indians avoid sun exposure like it's gamma radiation. The government could do a lot to cut their death rate just by telling the people to get out in the sun with some skin exposed every day to make some Vitamin D. Just half the exposure that causes sunburn, on half of your body, generates 15,000 to 20,000 iu of Vitamin D3!

The other thing they have tons of is ivermectin. It's used a LOT in the tropics, and India has huge chemical and drug manufacturing industries. There are so many random blind drug trials of ivermectin now published, it's a travesty to ignore it. Even if a variant eludes the vaccines, hardly anybody dies if they get ivermectin and have adequate Vitamin D on board.

I used to go to India now and then. EVERY time I went I got sick! I don't go there anymore (sometimes it takes me longer to not do the right thing <sigh>).

I certainly would not eat or drink anything there! But I'm very careful in Mexico, too. These days, I'm pretty careful what I eat or drink here in the US, as well. I do buy food, but it either has to sit in a bin for a couple of days, come in a can, or get cooked immediately. The exceptions come from my own garden and fruit trees.
