“Instead of starting a new state, we’re just asking to realign the border, because borders are arbitrary, they’re not cast in stone, they can be changed,” said Mike McCarter, president of Citizens for Greater Idaho, who is pushing for some rural eastern Oregon counties to join Idaho.

McCarter’s proposal would transfer all or part of 22 rural Oregon counties to Idaho to form a conservative megastate in the West, plus a more ambitious plan that includes all or part of eight California counties and five Washington counties. The expanded Idaho would be larger in size than every state but Alaska and Texas, a bright red counterbalance to the progressive, coastal Oregon, Washington and California.

...becuase the government of Idaho is doing such a bang-up stellar job of keeping the citizens it does have, safe from harm, now. coffee

Idaho will go from welfare state, to super welfare state. Hmm

Wouldn’t end to do this if they could coax even half of the prep pers out from their heavily-armed, camouflage trailers insulated by stacks of MREs. They’d have all the preparation they need.

Welp, Idaho IS where Ammon Bundy lives...so there is that FACT. smile

Funny that a sovereign cit like Ammon wants to become governor of a state which part of the "establishment" that he abhors. smile

Some historical perspective on the political evolution of Idaho. Back in the day, the Gem State was deeply blue, the base being farmers, ranchers, loggers, and miners - the bluest of collars. Along about the 70’s two things happened. One was that a great influx of California refugees (folks with relatively big bank accounts and able to sell homes worth three times what Idaho properties were worth), and who had Republican leanings, liquidated their assets in the Great Socialist Californiphate and moved to the beautiful sticks where they could live the rich and free life o’Riley. The other was that the obscenely wealthy fossil fuel industry realized that they could buy two Senators and two Representatives for pennies on the dollar - which they did. Campaign donations from out of state donors eclipsed in-state support in less than a decade. Turns out the blue collars ain’t that bright and big bucks fueled propaganda sold a lot of snake oil. Add to that a major population of batshitcrazy Mormons (the bulls!t religion that we have the entire grifter history for) and you got the modern and fukked up Idaho.

Sounds like a good idea. They want to Gerrymander their way into being limited to two Senators and a handful of Representatives (note the counties that are the object of their power lust are rural and low population).

All very true. Rural counties HATE the Liberal urban counties in WA, OR, CA with a passion. The rurual counties will be red in Congress anyway for the House. Hmm

What it also does is throw a large barrier between California and its two northern neighbors via Interstate 5, the main travel artery in the western three states.

They would not be swallowing another state, so each state would still have two Senators, and their two electoral votes. It would increase their population a bit in Greater Idaho, but maybe not enough to get many more representatives in the House. The net number of conservative reps probably would not change by much: Any district joining Idaho would probably have Republican reps.

This seems like the inverse of gerrymandering to me, but it would steal some electoral votes from "winner take all" states.

We're flying electric helicopters on Mars yet you can't turn on your clothes dryer in Texas. That's because scientists are in charge of Mars, and Republicans are in charge of Texas.
