Many of us seem to have a desire to talk about some favorite music…I thought it might be fun to think about words - lines that strike us in some way, whether it’s personally, socially, or poetically — or maybe they just resonate with you in a way that’s hard to explain (and you certainly don’t need to.)

I haven’t checked on this for a while but I think there’s a limit as to how much of a song you can post legally; if you want us to see an entire song you might want to link to the lyrics just to be safe.

I first noticed lyrics had a deeper meaning in my late teens. The first time I noticed it was The Motels - Take the L

Quote
Killing time and missing my cues
Watching her belong to you
Tears could only change my view

Take the L out of lover and it's over
Take the L out of lover and it's over

That's some heavy-duty heartache to come up with THOSE lyrics: The the L out of lover and its over.

Lover + leaves = over

Hmm

Another at the time was Total Eclipse of the Heart cry

Quote
(Turn around) Every now and then I get a little bit lonely
And you're never coming 'round
(Turn around) Every now and then I get a little bit tired
Of listening to the sound of my tears
(Turn around) Every now and then I get a little bit nervous
That the best of all the years have gone by
(Turn around) Every now and then I get a little bit terrified
And then I see the look in your eyes
(Turn around, bright eyes) Every now and then I fall apart
(Turn around, bright eyes) Every now and then I fall apart

Now who hasn't fallen apart as a young teen when your 27 year old boyfriend dumps you? frown

One last one...

Tears For Fears - Mad World

Quote
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

Who can't relate to having to sit still and be quiet as an ostracized awkward kid, while the teacher drones on and on, looking right past you, while she's counting the days until the weekend. coffee

Well, the rifle man’s stalking the sick and the lame
Preacher man seeks the same, who’ll get there first is uncertain
Nightsticks and water cannons, teargas, padlocks
Molotov cocktails and rocks behind every curtain
False-hearted judges dying in the webs that they spin
Only a matter of time till night comes stepping in

“Jokerman”
Bob Dylan, 1983
(Sound like 2020 or 2021 to you? How does he do that?)

Here are some lyrics with the music still attached…

You never change things by fighting the existing reality.
To change something, build a new model that makes the old model obsolete.

Holly Near…that’s going way back. I had forgotten how clear her voice is. Thanks for posting this.

I'll see your Jokeman and raise you For What It's Worth for older songs appropo for 2021: smile

Quote
There's something happening here
But what it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it's time we stop
Children, what's that sound?
Everybody look, what's going down?

There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

Mad World is one of my favorite songs of all times, but it may have more to do with what I was watching the first time I heard it. It was a CSI episode, and the camera was moving on a track in an elevator shaft down the floors of a Las Vegas hotel, rich folks in the penthouse, casino floor, kitchen, laundry. On the top floor there was a dead body, and there was one on the bottom.

It really made the point that no matter your station in life, it stills ends the same way.

My other favorite of all times is Boys of Summer by Don Henley. Absolutely perfect, and it evokes longing and regret: Something rare in a rock song.

[Verse 1]
Nobody on the road
Nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air
The summer's out of reach
Empty lake, empty streets
The sun goes down alone
I'm driving by your house
Though I know you're not home

[Chorus 1]
But I can see you
Your brown skin shining in the sun
You got your hair combed back and your
Sunglasses on, baby
I can tell you, my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

[Verse 2]
I never will forget those nights
I wonder if it was a dream
Remember how you made me crazy?
Remember how I made you scream?
Now I don't understand what happened to our love
But babe, I'm gonna get you back
I'm going to show you what I'm made of

[Chorus 2]
I can see you
Your brown skin shining in the sun
I see you walking real slow and
Smiling at everyone
I can tell you, my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

[Instrumental Break]

[Verse 3]
Out on the road today
I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice inside my head said
“Don't look back, you can never look back”
I thought I knew what love was, what did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go but...

[Chorus 3]
I can see you
Your brown skin shining in the sun
You got the top pulled down and the
Radio on, baby
I can tell you, my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

[Chorus 4]
I can see you
Your brown skin shining in the sun
You got your hair slicked back and those
Wayfarers on, baby
I can tell you, my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

Pretty unusual, in that all the choruses are different. He was relatively young when he recorded it, but this is a version he performed on Howard Stern recently: Boys of Summer

He's a few years older than me, and this is the 70 year old version of looking back at lost love.

We're flying electric helicopters on Mars yet you can't turn on your clothes dryer in Texas. That's because scientists are in charge of Mars, and Republicans are in charge of Texas.

Just jumped into my head:

“I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy
You see by my outfit that I’m a cowboy too.
You see by our outfits that we are both cowboys
If you get an outfit you can be a cowboy too.”
